Cerritos College English 20

Blogging in the Blogosphere
English 20

FORMAT:
When you blog, in the Title, write your first and last name as you would as if you are turning in a paper to me. Then you do not have to write my name because I know you are in my class. Write what English class you are in whether it is English 20, 52, 100 and what College.

For example, one would write:

Yue Hayes
English 20
Post #1

Homelessness
Font size
In addition, for the title, pick the topic of discussion, grammar/organization, content, current events, pop culture or literature as a TITLE that we have discussed in class. Write the posts like this: write #1 Post or #2 Post or Post #50, so I can easily keep track of them and how many you write.

Of course, you are welcome to write more than several posts, and in doing so is another form of participation and does count in the participation grade. Perhaps, in class, you may not participate all that much but in the realm of the blogosphere, you can from the comfort of your own home,

* reflect on the day's class discussion or offer up an insight that you found particularly interesting, etc., etc.
*

* How does it change the way you think or thought before on the subject?
*

* What actions might you take in the future? Anything is open to interpretation.

Of course, I need not go on and on about being respectful towards your peers' opinions and beliefs. If you disagree with another student's views be discreet about it: Do not say so and so is completely wrong because of this and that. Instead, say, I disagree with so and so and here are the reasons why I do. Go after their evidence and support and do not, I repeat do not attack someone else personally. This is supposed to be a forum for everyone to share their ideas and views.

*I will enforce the blogosphere by either deleting your hard work, making an example out of you here in the realm of the blogosphere or in class* . . .

    Hello English 20 Peers!!!

Well first my name is Matthew Mendez, and everyone calls me "Matt". I am a very outgoing and sociable person but most of you know that already;). I like meeting new people everyday so if you want to get to know more about me just ask because i like to talk. My favorite food is chicken and enjoy going out to the movies with friends. Anyway this is my first year at Cerritos College, everything is new to me. But i fell so comfortable in all my classes. I wont lie, I had thought in the back of my mind that English 20 would be an easy class. However you never know what a class is like until you meet your professor. When I walked in on the first day of class for English 20, I was like "okay lets see how this class will be". Next thing you know Professor Hsiao walked right in and basically laid down the law in the class. After hearing all the tons of work we will have to do in this class, I said to myself one thing "man I hate this but I love it". Also Professor Hsiao if your reading this, just know that I am thankful your a straight forward teacher who doesn't give up on his students and i respect you for that. Good-bye Santa Fe High School, Hello Cerritos College.

    Hello(:

Well to Start my Name is Brittany. Everyone calls me "Bee Suee". Starting at Cerrito's College made me very nervous. I wasn't sure what to expect from my professors. Starting my first day and first class Mr. Hsiao scared the heck out of me because he was very straight forward. As he went over what the class was about and everything he expected made me wonder if all my classes were going to be like that. I questioned if i should drop the class and switch to an easier professor but as he went on i realized that taking the easy way out wouldn't help me much so i decided to keep the class. Even though its tough being a full time student and full time employee i have nothing but faith in myself.

Greetings To My Old And New/Future Friends!
hello, my name is Rosybel people call me Rosy for Short and since my name can be hard to pronounce or say at times. I am 18years old turning 19 on October 27. I speak english spanish and beginning sign language too. I am engaged and have a beautiful baby girl named Delilah Michelle who is turning 9months Sept.2nd.... Oh oh please vote for her i recently entered her in the children's place model search entry. So go to childrensplace.com and enter her id#399476 to vote. Sorry for going way off topic but if i did not say this now i would of forgotten by the time i was done. This is my second year here in Cerritos and i am a child development major. Yes, it might sound weird to be interested in working with kids since i have one of my own, but i love kids.I want to get my A.A for child development and child development director here in cerritos to be able to extend my career/ future job. At first i would like to begin being a Pre-school or Kindergarden teacher. 5th grade is the highest grade i'll teach because i believe the kids after that grade would drive me crazy. Of course i will shot for a B.A then a M.A i want to be super prepared and be able to have more opportunities for high paying jobs. I believe my future career will not only benefit me but will also benefit my daughter and her future needs. Now a little about myself i am a very friendly outgoing girl. I can also be shy at times but most of the time i will be very straight forward. I like to help others and give advice when needed. I always say yes to helping people even though at times i should say no :). I tend to say whats in my mind without any fears. I judge no one by their looks but by their actions. I dislike careless and irresponsable people they tend to ruin my peace and slow me down. School wise im very good in all subjects but math so if you ever need help with any hw or someone to study with i will be willig to help except if it's Math sorry. I would also like to say i am a returning student i took Mr. Hsiao when i was fresh out of high school and i admit i did not want to return to his class after the first day. I was afraid i was not going to be good enough to survive his class without failing. The good thing is i got the hang of his grading and was able to pass English 20 with a C. English 52 was a whole different thing, i was determined to get a higher grade other than a C in his class. I must admit it was hard work im talking draft after draft and meeting up with many people to revise my papers. Studying was very important and being involved too. The results literally made me cry. I remember going to my cerritos to see my grades and just crying when i saw my A. i was really proud of myself and im hoping to get a good grade this semester as well. I would also like to takee the time to tell everyone to join PSA. We are like the coolest club in campus yes we are new but the bonding and friendship in this club is hard to find. PSA is all about family and helping the community. So if your interested ask us about it and join. Shout out to all the PSA officers in the class and i have to say we did a great job at club info day today. Now back to my background i have 3 brothers and no sisters. My parents are both Salvadoreans, i love pupusas. But my baby is not a full salvadorean like me her daddys mexican, so shes mixed :) Well shes actually really mixed, she has a little bit of puertorican and guatemalan blood too. My favorite food is Seafood and my favorite color is pink and tourqouise.

i strongly believe we should not leave many things for tomorrow because in reality we never know what can happen tomorrow. People tend to change and plans do not always work as planned. There is many things that have not been taken action of on time for waiting for that tomorrow. Why not do it now and get it over with then. i believe in no tomorrows but what i can accomplish today even if i am on a tight schedule.

@Martha: i would like to say being a nurse will take alot of work but if your up to the challenge i wish you the best of luck. Hope your looking into getting into the nursing program here in Cerritos College i heard they are the best. I have many friends trying to get in that program. Best advice i can give you is see a counselor as often as possible and get as much help as possible to fullfill your dreams. I think being friendly will help you in your career because friendly nurses are the ones always on call and get more money. I can tell you this because i had a teacher back in high school whos wife was a nurse and she told us how she would do it to win more money. I would also like to tell you hope we turn friends to it would be nice to know a future nurse even though im kinda scared of them because some poke in a painful way hehe.

My name is Marisol. I like bike riding at the beach, and spending time outdoors, I love hiking and nature.I also love visiting my grandparents at their ranch during summer. I also love spending time with the Youth I am A Jesus Freak (: I am very compassionate and emotional when I see people suffer. I am also very quiet but once I get comfortable I can talk a bit more. My major is Child Development for Special Education. (:
I'll be honest I did not want to return to class after the first day, I even text my friend he replied "quitters don't get too far" that hit me pretty hard. I started to read the syllabus and the letters students had written to Mr. Hsiao and they encouraged me to stay, I thought to myself "He probably gives tons of work for us to get better at it".

I am a really friendly person. I love to talk A LOT! i just need to get used to the new environment. I'm new at Cerritos College and I'm not gonna lie I was a bit scared to come to new big school. I graduated from a small Christian school called Turner High School with other 3 girls and 1 guy. I will love to get to know all of you guys! I have to say that when I found out that I was in English 20 I thought that it was going to be easy and it may help me a lot cause I have a lot of problems with the languages. I was born in Mexico and I live there for 12 years, then my mom, my dad and I came over here. So now is been almost 6 years and I'm still trying to learn to write and speak correctly. Its been hard but I thank God for all the challenge because I have learn a lot from it. Another thing I always let everyone know is that I'm a Jesus freak!! It may scared some people away but that's something I'm proud! :). Well I hope I get to make some friends in this class cause I still don't have friends in Cerritos College :(

    Hi everyone!
My name is Monica. Hope everyone is enjoying there Sunday. I am new to Cerritos College and being the fact that I have been out of school for quite some time (10 years) I was so scared on my first day of school. It took me 3 years of saying I would start school and never did. I was scared of the challenges I was going to face and especially because I thought I was too old for school. I thought life for me was having a job that will provide enough money to pay my rent, bills and partying but the truth is that there is so much more that I can do in this life. That is just a matter of me moving forward and not staying still in one place. I am grateful that God opened my heart and touched my soul. I see thing so differently now and I have grown so much as a person. I owe it all to the people that God has put in my path.

@Jonathan I so agree with you about wanting to do your best and looking forward to this semester. This was exactly what I was scared of the challenges that I was going to face but I am so glad I am in this class. I know that this will be a good learning experience and you can tell that Mr. Hsiao is in this career because he truly does love teaching and he wants to see the students achieve and move forward!

    Post Grammys Museum Reflection

I wanted to share with you the field trip that we went on yesterday. We went to the Grammys museum and went bowling after wards. So the museum it’s self was pretty interesting. I really enjoyed the different types and the clothing they had from era to era. You might think this is lame but the best part for me was the country section. I was able to take a picture of the hand written lyrics from “Tim McGraw” I so think he’s cute…. Aside from that, the desert my cousin and I had at the Lucky Strike was so delicious omg it was so good. We had a warm brownie with a scoop of vanilla ice cream on top. After our desert we went on to bowling and it was fun. I would look around at everyone and they were just enjoying their evening it was really nice to see that. The whole experience for me was awesome. I hadn’t been in a field trip with classmates in such a long time lol… So I really enjoyed it and the best part was that I was able to enjoy it with my cousin.
    Have a bless Sunday!

    Post Grammys Museum Reflection

Last Saturday I went to the Grammy Museum for the first time. I enjoy this field trip very much because it included learning, also just hanging out with friends and fellow students. The Bob Marley exhibit was my favorite. There were a lot of awesome photos oh him. I love music and loved being around that environment. We went to lucky strike, we ate and played a game. The food was not the best, but by the time we ate we were starving. I did not get a strike but I did get a lot of laughs. This field trip was fun and I can not wait for the next one.

    Introduce myself

Hello people! My name is HyunJung Joo and my nick name is Jenny  I have been in U.S. for almost 4 years. I am living with my relatives and my family is in Korea. I speak Korean fluently, little English and little Japanese. I am 18 years old and going to 19 in September 22. In the 4 years, I never visited my country, so I’m missing my country, my family, my old friends, foods, and everything so much ;D. If someone gave me a free airplane ticket, then I would go to visit Korea right away ^0^. This is my first semester and I just graduated from John F. Kennedy High School in this year. Most of my friends are going to Cypress College, so in first day of school, I felt very nervous because there is no one that I know in this school. Also my first class was English 20 and Mr. Hsiao made me scared too. I worried my poor English skills and I hope that I can pass his class in this semester with C.I am learning a guitar by myself. I am very outgoing person with my friends but when I meet a new person, I become shy. Especially, when I speak in English, I become shyer because I worry that I might say wrong. So, guys don’t misunderstand that I don’t want to talk to you guys because I have so many things to say, but I can’t speak English as fluently as my first language. I fell very irritable as well T-T. So feel free to talk to me, I want to be friend with you guysu~
Yesterday, I visited a website called Cyworld (this is a Korean website and it’s like Facebook) to see my friends in long time. I felt very surprise and because everybody changed so much. They don’t look elementary or middle school students any more! Some of my friends become soldiers and some others are ready for going to the military. Now I feel little older that I graduated from high school..haha.

Hello classmates, my name is Argelia Viera you can call me (Argie)

I am exited being in English 20 with Mr. Hsiao, I never experience a teacher like him, motivated and encouraging. This is my first semester in Cerritos College, and to start with a teacher like him, makes me dream and feel I can peruse my dreams. One day graduate from college or maybe transfer to a University. I like to share my experience as a new student and how I ended with Mr. Hsiao; I decided to come back to school because I need help in writing and reading. I like to share that I was trying to register online and really waned to take an English class, I logged in at different times, and all classes where closed. I had already given up. I try logging in for the last time and found one class that had a waiting list, I added to the list, thank you Mr Hsiao to accept me. Mr. H introduces himself firm and some one I will learn from. I’m exited being in English 20 with Mr. H, I feel he wants to share all his knowledge and I’m starving of learning. I wish I had meet Mr. Hsiao earlier in my life I probably will be a register nurse my dream career.

    Grammy Museum Reflection

I had a really good time at the Grammy Museum, I was able to socialize with my classmates, and also with different students from different English courses. I also meet students from different schools where Mr. Hsiao teaches. I enjoyed interacting with different students, I was able to learn that we all have a dream and that is to succeed in life. My expectations of the field trip were like when I had my last School field trip. I was thinking we where going to go in a yellow school bus that had no air conditioner. However, I was wrong. The bus was a tourist bus had different students of different ages and some went with there significant others, and some students took their whole family including their children. I admire one student that I can see in her face that she is really young, but also saw she was loving and caring with her daughter. The museum is in LA Live, a place I have been to before and this was my first time visiting the museum. I enjoyed playing the drums at the Latin section. The Cuban sounds had me dancing. One of the exhibits they have showed the artist that have won Grammy’s. In this exhibits, I saw Jennifer Lopez green flower dress that she wore for the Grammy’s. Her dress was see-through, and she wore under shorts that had crystals, “Beautiful!” I remember this dress from all magazines at the time. Overall, my field trip experience was productive and I enjoyed engaging with all my classmates.

Well my name is David Parga, but everyone calls me Parga. This is my second year at Cerritos College. I work full time and go to school part-time. It gets pretty stressful, so when it gets too much to handle I like to go out and have fun. I go to the beach, Disneyland, parks and just have a good time with my girlfriend and friends. Music also helps me relax, I'm into rap/hip-hop. Some of my favorite would have to be Tupac, Wu-tang, Biggie. I have thought about going to all the field trips and even joining PSA but my schedule makes it almost impossible. However, I'm still looking forward to Mr. Hsiao's class. I know it won't be easy but I feel like we're going to learn a lot. I'm actually kind of scared of you Mr. Hsiao so go easy. I intend to work hard this semester as opposed to last semester when I would slack off. I've made it a personal goal to do good in school and work hard so I can move out and start a career I would enjoy. You know what they say, if you do something you love, you'll never have to work a day in your life. That is what I hope to accomplish.

    what's up people!!
The names Richard but my closest friends call me chachito or chacha, why, I still don't know at this point or at least don't remember. Well when people first meet me they always ask these three words which is "Are you Filipino " and the truth is that I'm not. I am seventy five % Peruvian and twenty-five % Japanese because my dad is half Japanese and half Peruvian and my mom is full Peruvian.
I did cross country, track and field, and latin dance at my senior year of high school and played soccer outside of school,I just recently graduated from Downey High School this past summer and the transition from high school to college was a bit overwhelmingly at first espcially at professor's Hsaio's class which I thought his class might be an Easy A but boy was I wrong; as soon as he arrive the atomosphere has change from calm to very serious at the first half an hour when he gave out his syllabus. but then afterwards he became chill, laidback, and helpful with us. So I'm gonna enjoy his class and his club PSA as I like to make friends. so don't be afarid to say what's up to me :)

Hey everyone in RM 306 :)

My name is Connie, am 21 and married to my Marine for 3 years and am very proud of my husband each and every moment everyday :). Am friendly, nice, cool to hang out with, love to have fun anywhere especially in LA or long beach with my friends. I also like movies, art, dance, going to the beach day or night :P, and I love Seafood!!!! My friends know me as a Dancer in high school and my twin sister as an artist... yes i have a twin sister :). We do not look like and have different personality, as you can see i love to dance and she loves to draw. Anyways, am Mexican-American and I do not speak Spanish, just perfect English. I use to live in Lynwood, Twenty nine Palms base and now Norwalk. My friends are mostly in Lynwood, and so is my family, so I always go over there every weekend. Right now my husband is in his 2nd deployment, and he coming home soon and I can't wait to see him again. My family and friends know me as a very strong person and they look up to me because they never ever seen a person married or in a relationship with a military man who willing to wait for a long time for them to return. My friends and family tell me "how can you handle it being in a long distance relationship?? when he gone either 7 months, 3 months you see him for a wk and he goes another 3 weeks or months and now 7 more months, how do I do it!" The three keys I tell them... faith, trust, and communicate, that all you need in a long distance relationship. Without it your relationship won't last. :)It been a long time since I graduated from high school, and this is my first time at Cerritos College, but not my first time in College. I use to go to Long Beach City College, but it didn't work out over there. But now am fresh and new and ready to get educated, no more excuses for me and am doing it for me and my husband. Well if you want to get to know me more, don't be shy to getting to know me cause I'll know I'm the one will be shy not going to you first. :)

P.S. I may put a lot of love quotes, poems and lyrics cause their my favorite especially poetry.

What a weekend! I hope you all enjoyed your holiday...cause i didn't! lol. My name is Danielle Drew, and my friends call me...Danielle. lol. I had to work this weekend so i didn't get to do anything but earn time and a half! :) Well, I'm 27 with a 5 year old little boy. It is for him that I live day to day for, and strive to reach every goal I set. Before attending Cerritos college, I attended Marinello School of Beauty, where I earned my license. I've been doing hair for quite some time now and love everything about it. Now that I have reached that goal, I'm on to the next to reach my degree in Criminal Justice to be a crime scene investigator. I know....they don't go together do they? lol. But hey, at the end of my life, everyone I knew would be able to say that I did everything that I ever wanted to do!

Hello my Monday and Wednesday co-workers,

Well for starters my name is pronounced SiggyFredo,or you guys and gals can just call me Fredo. Although I'm serious in class I do have a huge sense of humor. I'm a single father who has joint custody of his son. It was difficult to deal with transition from having full custody to joint custody. It was hard for both my son and myself but we got use to it. I love to try new things and be outdoors. I love nature. There's nothing more beautiful than Gods creations. I go hiking every
Sunday so if any of you would like to join me just let me know. I love to stay in shape n stay healthy. If you're ever in search for the truth, just ask me and I'm pretty sure I have an answer for it even if its "I don't know". Hey an answers an answer right? I'm pretty much all over the place with school and work and being a father so leaves little time for fun stuff but trust me...I make the time. I've never been one to glorify myself so I really don't know how to talk about myself. Doesn't mean I'm not confident.

    Grammy Museum Reflection

I had a great time at the museum. although the museum was small, I was able to bond withother people, take pictures and go bowling. I saw a lot of Bob marley's items that he had and listen to his songs. his songs were a little bit weird and couldnt understand it but i can feel his passion. I was able to see other Grammy award winners and listen to their hit songs. In the theatre, they played beyonce where she performed with someone which i forgot her name. It was a cool show. I also was able to make my own beat at the museum

My name is Gloria lopez, I am 17 years old ( turn 18 on saturday). One thing I love doing is shopping, so if you love it too then we are going to get along just fine. Do not think of me as materialistic just because I love shopping I am the opposite of that, I do not party every weekend like most teens do. Even though most people get the impression that I party a lot. I like hanging out with my friends when I am not working, doing homework, or in school. I am a very sarcastic and funny person, I laugh at almost everything, but i am also a very shy person, as the semester goes on you will all see, that I am very sarcastic. I am very friendly (even though I do not seem like it), i like to have a good time and you will always find me with a smile on my face. :)

    TS:
The Bronte sisters weren't born with the talent to write, their talent was built through deep practice and myelin.

    Details:
As children the Bronte sisters created a serious of tiny books averaging eighty pages each. Their home was filled with books, current magazines and toys which they would use to help them write their tiny books. The Bronte sisters also wrote in a variety of forms as young teenagers, even though their writing was complicated and fantastical, their writing at that age wasn't that great. Their writing was put as Barker says "Slap-dash writing, appalling spelling, and non-existent punctuation."

    Quote:
Daniel Coyle in Talent Code, says "They became great writers not in spite of the fact that they started out immature and imitative, but because they were willing to spend vast amounts of time and energy being immature and imitative, building myelin in the confined safe space of their little books." (Pg. 57)

    Analysis:
Having started writing at such an early age the Bronte sisters where able to have more time to practice their writing. They had more time for trial and error which helped them learn from their mistakes. While creating their tiny books they developed story telling muscles. Through the vast time and energy spent writing their tiny books the Bronte sisters developed deep practice skills and myelin.

I am blessed and thankful to say I am 36 years young, I have been married 16 years to my husband Big D, I have a 4 year old son named DJ in preschool and a 9 year old daughter named Amber in the fourth grade. I have two dogs a long hair chihuahuua named Daisey and a blue pit bull named Smokey and they get along well! I am a full time employee at the Veterans Affairs Hospital( west la)going on 10 years. This is my second semester at cerritos college, I never attended a college before, I graduated from HS class of 1993 and my brain have a lot of dust on it because it take me a long time to catch on to something so simple when it comes to learning. My job pays pretty good but if I can do better why not. I also want to retire from my job with a higher pay as a Registered Nurse working with psychiatric patients (my favorite). The other side of me, I go on a lot of family outings, I run, play, jump, bike ride, dance, joke, act crazy and laugh with family and people I know. I love to party with my husband yep! we go out to clubs for the Grown and Sexy and drop it like its hot. Something interesting about me in 2004 I had a gastric Bypass surgery, I use to weight close to 300 pounds now I weight 135 pounds and keeping it off I even had a my son after my surgery. I will post pictures as soon as I catch on to the blog business. Enough about me I like the English 20 class I am kind of slow with some things but i will catch on. The Z-Boys went from surfing in the water to skating in an empty pool. Myelin was a big part of this transformation.

    Details:
The Z-Boys were passionate of surfing but one day no waves were around and they started skating. They started skating on the streets. In the 1970s they discovered they can find empty swimming pools in Bell Air and Beverly Hills. At first they started having difficulty riding on the walls of the pool. By 1975 Kitty Hawk was able to achieve liftoff. It took deep practice and constantly practices sliding down the walls of the pool with high speeds, from lifting high in the air to falling hard. Skating in an empty pool was not easy. It takes a balance of your whole body and consistently practicing.

    Quote:
Daniel Coyle in Talent Code says “Circuits are fired and honed. Mistakes are made and corrected. Myelin flourishes. Talent blooms. Skills is insulation that wraps neural circuits and grows according to certain signals.”(Pg.60-61).

    Analysis:
Z-Boys came from surfing in the ocean having this low mellow attitude to an aggressive more passionate love for skateboarding. Even though it took them some time to accomplish lift off myelin was a big part of this change. Hours of deep practice, falls and more falls they became successful in skating. More kids started to learn about this new sport and more they wanted to be like the Z-Boys.

    Mindset
The Danger of praise and Positive Label

Praising children and positive labeling can lead to fixed mindset from the start of the process.

    Details
Dr.Dweck and her team conducted a study based on a experiment she did with about hundreds of students, mostly adolescents. They gave the students ten non-verbal questions and praised them for their answer. But it wasn't just any kind of praised; some were praised for just getting the answer right and that the students were smart. Others were praise the effort they put in to get the answer.

    Quote
Both groups were exactly equal to begin with. But right after the praise, they began to differ. As we fear, the ability praise pushed students right into the fixed mindset, and they showed all the signs of it, too: When we gave them a choice they rejected a challenging new task that they could learn from they didn't want to do anything that could expose their flaws and call into question their talent

    Analysis:
With the students receiving a praise for the their ability to have the right answer; they already have a fixed mindset by thinking that they are smart and that they won’t have to work hard to get the answer for the next time they solve it. But for the students receiving praise for their effort and hard work; they will work even harder to emulate the same success they had to a more difficult question that they will face.

    Mindset
Negative labels and how they work.
T.S: When people are thinking in terms of fixed mindsets, they let stereotypes get to them.
(in the book it highlights stereotype in African Americans and females)
    Details:
Research done by Claude Steele and Joshua Aronson showed that even checking a box to indicate your race or sex can trigger the stereotype in your mind to lower a test score. If you are reminded about your gender or race before a test studies show you will lower your score-a lot. They say females are not good at math and science, if you put more males in a classroom right before a test, down go her test scores.

    Quote:
Carol S. Dweck in Mindset said," This is why. When stereotypes are evoked , they fill peoples minds with distracting thoughts-with secret worries about confirming the stereotype.People usually are not even aware of it, but they do not have enough mental power left to do there best on a test."
    Analysis:
We have heard these stereotypes since we were little, that boys are better at math and science. So when females enter the course they already go in doubting themselves and they do not try to succeed and learn, they have a fixed mindset. Females end up putting themselves down and confirming these stereotypes instead of repudiating them. we when are asked during a test our sex and race we feel as if they are categorizing us so we stop trying these is how a fixed mindset works. We should turn the negative into a positive and in doing so we now have a growth mindset.

    Mindset
    "Mindset And School Achievement"
They measured the mindsets of the junior high school kids to see how the two different mindsets coped through the challenge.

    Details
Dr.Dweck and her team conducted a study to see if the students believed their intelligence was a fixed trait or something that could be develop during time. They wanted to see how the two different mindset reacted towards the difficult challenge of being in Junior High School, knowing that the work gets harder.

    Quote
“Here’s how students with the fixed mindset explained their poor grades: “I am the stupidest” or “I suck in math.” Many covered these feelings by blaming someone else: “[the math teacher] is a fat male slut… and [the English teacher] is a slob with a pink ass.”

    Analysis:
The students that had a fixed mindset seem to struggle more than those with a growth mindset. Students with fixed mindset can’t handle being under pressure or trying something new; they aren’t up for a challenge. They put themselves down and try to make themselves feel better by blaming someone else for it. And those students with the growth mindset were able to handle the challenge. They increased their grades over the years unlike students with the fixed mindset. Those with the growth mindset are positive and do what ever it takes to succeed.

    Can Everyone Do Well
In the book it talks about Garfield High School being the worse high School. In 1987 it was one of the worse Schools in the state of California. The population being Latino and low income families; however Jaime Escalate believed the lot of his students had talent, he had a mindset to teach his students the knowledge he had. He gave them growing mentality. Jaime was determent to teach calculus and he achieved it with his determination. His students did not continue with the negative fame of Garfield High. Garfield High School was one of the 3 best score in Calculus at that time, thanks to a teacher that believed in his students and was determent to teach.

    Details
Jaime Escalate did not teach them calculus only. His colleague Benjamin Jimenez took them to the top of the nation charts in math. most of the Garfield students earned test grades that were high enough to gain them to college credits. In this year a few hundred Mexican American students passed at a high level. This means there a lot of intelligence out there being wasted by underestimating students potential to develop.

    Quote:
Carol S. Dweck Mindset page 72
In my Family to be good is to fail. To be very good is to fail. The only thing not a failure is to be great.

    Analysis
I believed that we can all learn in life, like Jaime Escalante said with a good teaching and with determination and wiliness to learn. We can be like the students in Garfield high school. It took them time and effort, Jaime Escalante as a teacher and the students with open mindset to learn.

Most students have the low-effort system because most students worry more about being "cool" or being "nerdy. They do not see the importance of their education they feel that they need to set themselves apart from adults.

    Quote
Carol S. Dweck said "This Low-effort syndrome is often seen as a way that adolescents assert their independence from adults, but it is also a way that students with the fixed mindset protect themselves."(Page 58)

    Analysis
Everyone has gone through that stage in school where they worried about being "cool" and did not focus on school.Students with a fixed mindset feel that school is not very important and try more harder to become popular instead of trying harder to get the best grades possible.

    The Low Effort Syndrome
Our students with the fixed mindset who were facing the hard transition saw it as a threat.

It threatened to unmask their flaws and turn them from winners into losers. In fact, in the

fixed mindset, adolescence is one big test.

    Details
It is no wonder that many adolescents mobilize their resources, not for learning, but to

protect their egos. In fact, students with the fixed mindset set tell us that their main goal

in school aside from looking smart is to exert a little effort as possible. They heartily

    agree with statements like this:

    Quote
Carol S. Dweck Mindset page 58

“In school my main goal is to do things as easily as possible so I do not have to work

    very hard”

    TS:
Students with a fixed mindset have a harder time dealing with academic challenges than students who have a growth mindset.

    Details:
Carol S. Dweck developed a study in students who were transitioning to junior high school. They were going to measure their mindsets by asking them if they believed their intelligence was fixed or something that they could develop. For the next two years, Dweck and her team would analyze how they coped with the challenge of harder work and stricter grading policies.

    Quote:
“In our study, only the students with the fixed mindset showed the decline. They showed an immediate drop-off in grades, and slowly but surely did worse and worse over the two years. The students with the growth mindset showed an increase in their grades over the two years” (Pg 57).

    Analysis:
After concluding her study, Dweck found that students with a fixed mindset have a hard time dealing with academic challenges while students with a growth mindset are successful. The students with a growth mindset stand up to the challenge and make an effort to learn. On the other hand, students with a fixed mindset blamed their teachers and claimed that they were simply not capable. The difference between the two mindsets in this scenario is that the fixed mindset students gave up in frustration, while the growth mindset students do what it takes to succeed.

Jackson Pollock the greatest American painters who admired art, who never gave up on what he wanted to do because other people thought he was not that creative.

    D:
He loved the idea of calling himself an artist. Every where he go he thinks about art and he did art work all the time. He even ask other artist’s to mentor him what ever they knew of art and right after he would do the art work he had learned from them to make it his unique work of art.

    Q:

It saying that any one can do anything, if they put their mind to it and it just might be a big interest to them later and they might not realize it. Some people did believe Jackson Pollock was a horrible artist and he should give up while he had the chance. But he did not listen and kept at it on something he was interested in and came out to be the greatest American painter in the twentieth century of modern art.

Students that have the fix mindset and are smart try to look not as smart as they are. They want to have that potential of being cool, so they work as little as possible so they won't look that smart.

    Details
Students worry more on their reputation and their academics. Which is bad because the less effort they put in school the more of a failure they will be. They just try to fit in so they won't be outcast as a "nerd" and have no friends.

    Quote
Carol S. Dweck said "For students with the growth mindset, it doesn't make sense to stop trying. For them, adolescence is a time of opportunity: a time to learn new subjects, a time to find out what they like and what they want to become in the future."

    Analysis
People with the growth mindset don't really care about their popularity, they care more what is going to be important for them in the future. Being cool is not going to help in your future.

    The Talent Code

    Topic Sentence
The more you spent deep practice, the better the result is.

    Details
In United Kingdom’s literature history, Bronte sisters created some books with a great achievement. Elizabeth Gaskell wrote a book called Life of Charlotte Bronte about their life histories. Gaskell said that the proof of their talent was the series of tiny books when they were children. However, Juliet Barker found Bronte sisters’ real histories. Barker found out that they were not born in talent. When they were young, their writing skills were very poor and lousy. They spent vast amount of time to imitate other writers’ skill. Later on, they became very popular writers.

    Quote
In The Talent Code, Daniel Coyle says “Deep practice and myelin give us a better way to look at the Brontes. The unskilled quality of their early writing isn’t a contradiction of the literary heights they eventually achieved ã…¡ it’s a prerequisite to it.”(57).

    Analysis
Although Bronte sisters were an immature for writing at first, deep practice made them to become genius writers. This is not important that they imitated other writers’ skills. The most important thing is that they spent much time for writing and this made them to get success. If people spent much time with deep practice, this would give them have a good result.

Even females at the top universities in the country say that other people's opinions are a good way too know their abilities. Girls with a fixed mindset don't always go to far. Psychologists are now learning how negative labels harm achievement with a fixed mindset more than with a growth mindset.

    Details:
In a research by Claude Steele and Joshua Aronson show that by checking a box to state your race or sex, can trigger a stereotype in your brain and lower your test score. When stereotypes are formed, they can fill peoples mind with distracting thoughts and with secret worries, about confirming the stereotypes. People are not always aware of these stereotypes, but it still can affect the mental power enough from doing the best on the test. People with a fixed mindset resonate to the message of negative stereotypes saying you and your group are permanently inferior.

    Quote:
Carol S. Dweck in Mindset said “It mainly happens to people who are in a fixed mindset. It’s when people are thinking in terms of fixed traits that the stereotypes get to them.”(pg.75)

    Analysis:
Only people in a fixed mindset let the stereotypes control there mental power and affect how they do on a test. People in a fixed mindset can have both positive and negative labels mess with there mind, the stereotypes of growth mindset doe not disrupt their over all performance.

The danger of praise and positive labels.

    Details:
This is a very intersting section of this book due simply because of the whole praise theroy and how danrgerous it can be on a students mindset. The praising of a students grade makes them feel above everyone else. This is a negative reinforcement due simply because it puts the person on a pedastole so to speak and they feel they have to maintain it. The prasing of a student also inhibits their drive to take on challenges due to fear of looking unintelligent.

    Quote:
In the mindset Carol S. Dweck states "As we feared, the ability praise pushed students right into the fixed mindset, and they showed all the signs of it too" pg 75
    Analysis:
This confirm how the praise of students affects their ability to want to take on more difficult challenges. Student that have been praised fear the loss of looking like if they are not that bright to their peers thus avoiding anything they may not understand and comprehand. Students that were praised for working hard actually had the opposite reaction where they wanted to take on more challenges.

    The Myelin Skaters

    Details:
If Myelin and deep practice were ever explained more simple then this is the section that says it all. The way the Z-boys praticed surfing was the same way they skate boarded. However when the tide was sufficient the Z-boys would skate board. They were the pioneers of skate boarding by being the first to try grinding on handrails and curbs, also by jumping over objects. Skate boarding inside of a swimming pool boosted their skate boarding and surfing skills to another level because of it's condensed structure. The pool gave them high speeds and quicker turns which made them fire up those nerves and insulate them with myelin which made them much more better surfers and skate boarders all at once. Each sport they did whether it be surfing or skate boarding are the best ways of deep practice simply because one sport reinforced the other. They both shared the same fundamentals.

    Quote:
In the "The Talent Code" by Daniel Coyle, he states "According to that of thinking, the Brontes and the Z-Boys succeeded bacause they were exceptional-mysteriously gifted outsiders, destiny-kissed Kids from Nowhere." (61)

    Analysis:
What is very intriguiing about this passage is that Daniel Coyle knows that these kids weren't boen exceptional, he knows these kids practiced over and over again since childhood. Honing in on their skills and mastering them to look as if they were born exceptional. The Bronets had their early writing as deep pactice, the Z-Boys had their surfing and empty pool. These all relate to the same deep practice the Brazilian culture flourishes on with futsol. If "practice makes perfect" then "Deep practice makes awe inspiring master pieces."

    Chapter 4 mindset

    Topic Sentence
The growth mindset is what drives at champion, not natural talent.

    Details
A growth mindset learns from failures and seeks to discipline them selves. They constantly look to improve on there weakness. While natural talent, believes that putting effort is for the week and endowed. They see no point in analyzing their deficiencies and coaching or practicing them away. In other words when something is hard they just give up. While a person with a growth mindset would learn from the challenge and strive achieve from it. Another example is Michael Jordon. As a teenager Michael Jordon was cut from the high school basketball varsity team and wasn’t recruited by the collage he wanted (North Carolina.) Devastated from being cut from the varsity team, Michael Jordon did not give up. Instead he went and practice every day before school at six in the morning. In collage he constantly worked on his weaknesses-his defensive game and his ball handling and shooting. Even after loosing the last game of the season in collage, Jordon began to practice his shots for hours in order to prepare for next years. The Bulls in the NBA later drafted Jordon. He is now known in most eyes as the greatest basketball play ever.

    Quote
In Mindset, Dr. Carol S. Dweck says, “ The mental toughness and the heart are a lot stronger than some of the physical advantages you might have”(86)

    Analysis
A mental toughness and heart are what drive true champions. They believe in the process and steps it takes to be great. By analyzing there weaknesses and putting effort into improving them. As Michael Jordon when he decided to discipline himself by practicing every morning before school. His hard work and thirst for always seeking to upgrade him self made him into the greatest basketball play in the NBA. The growth mindset is what drives a champion; it allows them to stretch out beyond there expected potential.

    What is Failure?

    Details:
There a very big difference between the two mindset of fixed and growth, that difference is how they handle failing. With a growth mindset, they see it as an opportunity to learn from there mistakes. While with a fixed mindset, they see failing as the last thing they ever want to endure. Kareem adbul-Jabbar had a growth mindset when playing at UCLA. He had to come up with different methods of scoring as his dunks were forbidden to be used. So instead of quitting and moping around; he started working twice as hard on the other shots such as sky hooks, bank shots, and his turnaround shot, which lead him to become one of the best players that the Lakers had today winning five NBA champion with Magic Johnson. For the fixed mindset, they see it as that’s it I quit sort of thing. For instance John Mcenroe was suicidal when he thought that if he loses his brother in the final, that he was going to jump off of sears tower. He tried playing a mixed doubles at Wimbledon thinking he was going to do good, but instead became a disaster losing both 3 sets and also losing his serve twice. He said that he would never touch a racquet again.

    Quote.

In Mindset, Dr. Carol S. Dweck says, “Those with the growth mindset found setbacks motivating they’re informative. They’re a wake – up call (99)

    Analysis:

Since growth mindset will do anything to achieve its goal, they are willingly accept defeat and will learn from their mistakes as to why this didn’t work or should of use this instead of that. Michael Jordan who just came back from playing baseball had to a lot of catching up to do, he admits it by saying “you can’t leave and think you can come back and dominate this game. I will be physically and mentally prepared from now on.” (99) and one of these ads for Nike was “I’ve missed more than nine thousand shots. I’ve lost almost three hundred games. Twenty-six times, I’ve been trusted to take the game-winning shot, and missed.”

    Mindset Chapter 4

    Topic Sentence
The growth mindset plays a big role in sports, it makes an athlete into a better individual which they try and improve on their skill.

    Details

Athletes that are "natural" are the ones that have the fix mindset. If something doesn't go their way or they fail in what they are good at, they either give up or make it worse into what they could of made something better. Athletes with the growth mindset and that are in the same situation they think in what they can do better in, in the next set, next game, or the next race. This is what makes them improve in their game, fixing their mistakes into a game changing moment."Natural" athletes know that they are good enough and don't think about changing something in what they need help in this is why they fail consistently.

    Quote
In Mindset Dr Carol S. Dweck says, "When your sitting on the changeover you think of pasts matches that you've lost the first set...came back and won the next three. There's time. You reflect on your past experiences, being able to get through it."

    Analysis
This is an athlete with the growth mindset, seeing what he can do and change the outcome of the game. Seeing what his weaknesses was in that set and work on it in his mind to improve his weakness. By putting his past experience into his mind and work on the next set, he change the outcome of the game and won. This is the difference with the growth and fixed mindset, growth mindset wants to change and improve on their game. While the fixed mindset just doesn't work on it and fails and fails some more.

The growth mindset is what drives at a person who is willing to work hard, not natural talent.

    Details
A growth mindset is from a failed attempt which they want to discipline themselves in the failed attempt. People look to improve and want to improve on their weakness. Natural talent thinks that by putting too much effort is for the weak. They see no point in correcting their faults. They feel like they don’t need to practice it over many times. They practically give up when it gets to hard for them to handle. While a person with a growth mindset would learn from the challenge and strive achieve from it. Another example is Wilma Rudolph. As a baby she was premature. She was always sick. At the age of 4 she almost died from pneumonia, scarlet fever and polio. Her illness caused her left leg to be paralyzed. For eight years Wilma pursued physical therapy for she can use her leg. Not till the age of twelve was she able to use her leg in a brace and walk normally.

Wilma won 3 gold medals in the 1960 Rome Olympics for her sprints and relay. Chapter 4 Mindset

The fixed mindset on sports is one who says and thinks they can’t get any better, a person with a growth mindset see improvement on everything.

The fixed mindset lacks improvement, thinking their given born talents are set for them there is no way to improve them at all. They see failure as humiliation and impossible to repair. Billy Beane was a person that had all the talent set for him he thought there was no need in effort to improve. A growth mindset is one who disciplines themselves to become successful, knowing they are not born with gifted talents like other people they practice, practice, practice.

In Mindset, Dr. Carol S. Dweck says, “Once, after the team lost the last game of the season, Jordan went and practice his shots for hours.”

To become great like many athletes have done, one needs to put effort and all the strength, they need “The mindset of a champion” the need to accept when they fail and thinking they can get better at it.

A fixed mindset is being pessimistic and getting defeated or being afraid of defeat, sometimes a fixed mindset can lead you to another direction.
    Details.
Billy Beane was a natural at sports. He excelled in them.He was not good at failing, he had a fixed mindset that natural talent should not need effort, effort is for the others, less talented. Beane did not know how to fail and except it.Beane watched another player lenny who was not naturally talented but still did well. lenny was not afraid of failing or striking out.beane watched him in awe.Beane the baseball player with the fixed mindset never made it but Beane the successful executive did.
    Quote
In mindset, Dr.Carol S. Dweck says," it wasn't merely that he didn't like to fail' it was as if he didn't know how to fail."(82)
    Analysis
Beane could not handle the stress of failing and striking out. Beane by watching lenny figured out his mindset was keeping him from excelling at the sport. Lenny had no fear of failure and that was what a true baseball player is supposed to be. Beane figured that was not him. He knew he loved the sport but his mindset was keeping him from it. Instead of completely leaving the sport he decided to become an executive. The fear of striking out was gone and he still would be involved in the sport somehow. In this case a fixed mindset lead him to become a successful executive.

    Chapter 4 Mindset

The growth mindset in sports is a person who see's what they can improve on, a fixed mindset is a person who thinks its all about talent and doesn't really take any work.

Michael Jordan disciplined himself after not making his high school basketball team. Practicing more then usual and not giving up, that's someone with the growth mindset. The fixed mindset is someone who thinks that just because they have the physical advantages they don't have to practice or discipline themselves. Just like Sergio Garcia, he had all the physical advantages but his mindset held him back and he blamed everything and anyone else for him failing. He didn't want to take responsibility for his own mess ups.

In Mindset, Dr. Carol S Dweck say's "The mental toughness and the heart are a lot stronger than some of the physical advantages you might have. I've always said that and Ive always believed that."(PG 86)

In order to succeed you must have a growth mindset, putting fourth the strength and effort it takes to win.

For example Michael Jordan, he was not a natural as many thought. He worked very hard to get to where he did. As a teen he was cut in his high school varsity team they did not think he was capable of playing. In college he wasn’t recruited by North Carolina State. Even though Michael was devastated for being cut off the team failure was never an option for him. He was willing to do anything to become the great player he is now, he would practice before going to school. He accepted his weakness and always worked on them. Out of all the players he was the one that gave it his all. Even when they lost the last game of the season, Michael went to practice his shots because he was preparing for the next year. Michael Jordan is consider one the best basketball players of the NBA. The main reason why he is such a successful man is because he has a growth mindset.

    Quote:
In Mindset, Dr. Carol S. Dweck says, “The mental toughness and the heart are a lot stronger than some of the physical advantages you might have.”(86)

    Analysis:
Having the right mentality is what takes you success not just your physical. If you have the real passion to do something there will be no obstacle bigger than your passion. Accepting your weaknesses and working on each and every one of them will give you a positive mentality. Having a growth mindset will lead you to be a champion because those athletes with a growth mindset are always positive and accept there flaws. In order to gain something good in life one has to work hard and keep a positive mentality at all times.

Having natural talent does not lead you to the try to top.Someone with natural talent does not know how to fail.A minute something goes wrong they do not try to fix there problems in constructive ways. They are not good at losing, but they are great at winning and not being aware of having a growth mindset. A person with a growth mindset will observed their situation and not avoid it. While the person with a fix mind set showing weakness was not the answer. But yet, Michael Jordan who was a well known greatest basketball player, was not a natural in basketball. He was a hard working athlete, he had a growth mindset. For example, when he was cut from the high school team or when he did not get recruited in the college basketball team. He was devastated, but for Jordan that did not stop him. He went back and discipline himself. He worked on his weakness he practice his shots for hours, and worked on his ball handling and his defensive game. So when the upcoming year came he would be prepared.
In mindset, Carol S. Dweck says "a genius who constantly wants to upgrade his genius"(86).
For a person to be able to overcome on there a goal needs to have a lot of discipline. A person who is willing to not give up and give it there all. Michael Jordan knew by practicing very hard, he would be able to succeed in playing basketball and having that growth mindset. He was able to prove to people he was not going to take no for an answer. Jordan was able to become a well known greatest basketball player, in basketball history.

Slowing down and going over deep practice will help you reach your potential.

Deep practice will help you to achieve your potential slowing down and repeating the process over and over will help you to better understand the concept. When you slow down to will be able to pay more attention to your mistakes and become more precise. It is better to do everything step by step than to just do everything at once. When you take your time you will be more precise than when you rush.

    Quote
In Talent Code code Daniel Coyle says"Going slow allows you to attend more closely to your errors, creating a higher degree of precision with each firing-and when it comes to growing Myelin precision is everything."

    Mindset Ch.4

    T.S.
According to how hard the person works, the person would receive back.

    Detail
Wilma Rudolph, who was the fastest woman and she won three gold medals for sprints and relay in the 1960 Rome Olympics. However, she did not well at track when she was young. When she was born, she was a constantly sick child. When she was four age, she had a long struggle with pneumonia, scarlet fever and paralyzed left leg. Later, finally she could walk normally at age twelve. She applied lessons for basketball and track. Although she lost every race, she never gave up. She had more spent time on race when she started track. However, as she endeavored on track with longer work, she did not win any races. Finally, she began to win and became the world championship.

    Quote
In Mindset by Dr. Carol S. Dweck, Wilma Rudolph says “Some might attribute my transformation to the laws of heredity… But I think it was my reward for all those hours of work on the bridle path, the neighborhood sidewalks and the schoolhouse corridors.”(88).

    Analysis
Although she spent a long time on tracks, she could win later. Rather than she giving up, she worked for a longer time on practicing. She wanted to do track so badly. Even though a longer time on practicing might gave her pain, she kept do it. This shows a lesson that a good result might come later but the result would never lie for how much she spent on it.

    Chapter 4: Mindset

Topic Sentence: Having natural talent does not always mean that you will be successful at what you are going to do.

Details: People that think they are going to make it big just because of the talent they have, have to think twice. Someone can be so good at a certain thing then get over confident and actually end up loosing the talent they have. They think well I am good at it so I do not have to practice because I am already good at it. And at the end they end up loosing all of the talent they had because they did not have the mindset of a champion. They had the fixed mindset.

Quote: In Mindset, Carol S. Dweck says, "Did Beane try to fix his problems in constructive ways? No, of course not, because this is a story of a fixed mindset. Natural talent should not need effort. Effort is for others, the less Endowed" (pg 83).

Analyzes: People with a fixed mindset discover their talents, and then think that they know it all, but at the end they end up being nothing. They say goodbye to the talent and are stuck doing things they do not like. I think that people could be good at something but they are not always going to have that to back them up. The talent will soon enough go away if u do not practice. The people with a growth mindset practice till they can not practice anymore. They have the mind of achievement and whatever they love they are going to go for it and be the best they can at it.

    Chapter 4
Mindset: Character, Heart, Will, and the Mind of a Champion

    Ts:
People are not born with talent or intelligence, it takes having the mind of a champion to develop the skills needed to be successful.

    Details:
Carol S. Dweck explains how there are different names for the key to success but ultimately they’re the same thing. It’s the same thing that makes us practice, and what allows us to pull through when we need to fight the most. She also continues to explain how this is known as having the mentality of a champion. A true champion has the ability to win even when things are not quite right. She gives different examples such as Billie Jean King who explains how she was able to raise her level of play when she needed to.

    Quote:
Carol S. Dweck says in Mindset “All of these people had character. None of them thought they were special people, born with the right to win. They were people who worked hard, who learned how to keep their focus under pressure, and who stretched beyond their ordinary abilities when they had to”. (pg 97)

    Analysis:
In today’s society, we tend to explain people’s success by saying that they are “naturals”. In the story Mindset Dweck explains how this is not the case. She explains how most people who win are hard workers with the determination to keep focus. These people are driven by their goal to win, enabling them to go beyond what their usually capable of. These individuals weren’t “born” with this natural ability to win, but have developed through discipline and practice. Similarly, sometimes individuals are going through internal problems but in a game they channel out those emotions. These are the qualities of a true champion.

    T.S:
Muhammad Ali was known for defeating Sonny Liston and made boxing history, not with his fists but with his brains.

    D:
He did not have to use a lot of his fists to defeat him, he use his mind to defeat him. Ali was a boxer; his boxing measurements were all wrong, he always expose his jaw and kept avoiding punches in his torso. When Ali was about to box Sonny Liston, he first study him outside of the ring. He read about him, he saw interviews about him and he went to sleep thinking about what he really is as a person, not a boxer. He was like a psychologist instead of a boxer. When the match came, the arena was half empty people thinking this match was going to end faster than they though, well they though wrong. Ali went crazy before each fight; all Liston could see was Ali’s mouth and only his mouth, which what Ali only wanted him to see. That way no one would ever expect a knock out punch.

    Q:
In Mindset, Carol S. Dweck says a famous boxing manager reflects on Ali: “He was a paradox. His physical performances in the ring were absolutely wrong… Yet, his brains was always in perfect working condition. (Page 85)

    A:
What he meant was Ali use his brains to defeat Liston. He study his personality, how was he like and use that in the match. Even though his fighting style was not the correct use for boxers, his mind was his physical strength. Everyone did not expect Liston to lose to a knock out, but hey if it did not happen, Ali would not made history. All he did was study him like a psychologist and use that to his advantage in his match. Even though you do not have a great talent in boxing and was not doing them correctly, you can use your mind as your strength.

Mindset: Character, Heart, Will, and the Mind of a Champion

    T.S
People may think naturals have special talents to become a champion but character, heart, will and most importantly a mindset of a champion becomes a true champion.

    Details:
    1. Practice is what allows you to dig down deep when you need it the most.
    2. Naturals or average athletes needs practice and the will to win to become a champion.
3.Billie Jean King has a true mindset of a champion.
4.She tells us that being a champion is the ability to win when things are when things are not quite right.
    5. When you're npt playing well and your emotions are no the right ones and being to overcome these obstacles makes youa champion.
    6. When things dont go the way you want it to be during the game, its very hard to control your emotions and to focus on whats wrong.
    7. Having the will and heart to grow out of your mistakes and learing to control, is what makes a champion.
8.In a fixed mindset for example, John McEnroe, one of the great pro tennis player of all time had an emotional issue.
    9. When things go wrong during a match, his emotion takes over and he starts to blame things that are around him instead of himself.
    10. But after a match, he would practice harder and this is where his growth mindset comes from for him to be one of the best.
    11. In a growth mindset, Mia Hamm, one of the greatest soccar player in the world, think that she was a greatest player in the world? here is a quote of what she responded to this question.

    Details
Deep practice is skills that consist of identifing important elements
and grouping them into meaningful framework. The reason one can
understand is that one spends many hours learning and practicing. One
learns letters, shapes, and practice chunking letters left to right

    What is failure?

    Details:
Failure is something needed by anyone and everyone to understand what they did wrong. Once failure is understood then one can make the change to adapt and conform to avoiding that obstacle. One was to fail in order to really appreciate a hard earned win. Failures are part of life and are very important because we truly learn to appreciate something after we have experienced the contrast.

    Quote:
In the Mindset Carol S. Dweck states "Those with the growth mindset found setbacks motivating. They're informative. They're a wake-up call." (99)

    Analysis:
Thru mistakes one has made one can learn to over come them much accurately with the growth mindset. With a fixed mindset giving up and not trying at all are the only options. when one has failed with a growth mindset, one stops, analyzes and retries again until the task at hand is complete to their liking. In a fixed mindset, set backs label you. Where as in a growth you are unable to be label simply because you continue to "wow" everyone including yourself. Failures are need in life so we may perfect our standard of living.

    Chapter 5 mindset

    T.S
People with a fixed mindset do not admit and correct their deficiencies, this ultimately leads to their demise.

    Details
In chapter five we read that the company Enron went belly up. Because they focused merely on talent they pushed their employees into a fixed mindset. The employees focused more on looking talented than being talented. Praising people only pushed them into a fixed mindset, and this is where Enron made the vital mistake that lead to their demise. The employees settled and never went past their talent they were not being pushed to excel. Also we slightly touch on a study conducted for students at the university of Hong Kong. The study asked student to take an all English class many refused because they did not want to look deficient. The students were smart and talented but when their knowledge and talent was challenge they refused to take the course.

    quote
In the Mindset by Carol S. Dweck states,"they will not take the remedial course. They will not stand up to investors and the public and admit that they were wrong. they'd sooner lie."(109)

    Analysis
When in a fixed mindset your at a stand still. You end up settling. You do not push yourself. When employers do not push their employees the whole company is at a stand still while other companies are growing, learning and teaching their employees. Once things got hard people were running around like chickens with their heads cut off. The employees had been praise for being talented but not for being talented in their jobs. They never went after anything bigger because they did not want to look bad and look "untalented."As for the Hong Kong students those who took the course were asked to write about their scores 40% lied and added points to their scores. The fixed mindset had made the flaw intolerable. Failure to a fixed mindset dose not mean learning from their mistakes to them it mean your dumb and incapable.

    Mindset Ch 5

In business people with the growth mindset succeed over people with fixed mindset.

Growth mindset business leaders are entirely involved in the growth of their companies and personnel. Fixed mindset are egocentric they think they are the only one’s greater and the rest lower than them. Fixed mindset people want to prove they are ideal when confronting competition, they desperately look for their own way, not realizing their actions downgrade their own companies. Fixed mindset business leaders see competence in everything including people with the growth mindset that work for them.

In Mindset Carol S. Dweck says “So not only do those with a growth mindset gain more lucrative outcome for themselves, but, more important, they also come up with more creative solutions that confer benefits all around” Pg 139.

Leaders with a growth mindset see potential in all people they care about people and their say. Not only they grow within themselves but also help grow all people around them, including the business, which has a positive outcome. Is an example that teamwork with growth mindset succeed.

    T.S.
Martin Eisenstadt decided to find parental histories of every person who has been successful in their life time, which he found all, had one thing in command… their parents die when they were young.
    D.
He went through all the different list of people who were writers, scientists, political leaders, and the list continues. He wanted to find out how did they became geniuses or accomplish their achievements, was it because the hard work the parents made them do, no it wasn’t possible because they lost their parent or parents during their childhood. He had made a list of all famous or accomplished people who had lost a parent in a very young age who became the person to be known today. They are Julius Caesar lost his father at fifteen, Napoleon lost his father at also fifteen, Lincoln mother at nine years old, and lastly yes this list also included Hitler, his father died at the age of thirteen. Their was also artists and scientists as well such as, Newton father died before his birth, Michelangelo lost his mother at age six, the Bronte sisters Charlotte age five, Emily age three and Anne age one lost their mother and lastly Twain his father died when he was eleven. Even actors and actress in today present were in the same position as these successful people. When those events happen, something had triggered their mind to think you are not safe. Which made them realize their talents in life and become better at it and achieve the goals they were required to become a successful person they are today, well I wouldn’t say Hitler success was a good thing, it was still bad, but he had though like the other people, who was in his same position when he was young.
    Q.
The Talent Code, Daniel Coyle says Dean Keith Simonton wrote on parental loss in Origins of Genius, “[S] uch adverse events nurture the development of a personality robust enough to overcome the many obstacles and frustrations standing in the path of achievement.”
    A.
The meaning of this is the people who had lost a parent or parents, had found their talent in life that fits their whole personality as a person. Even if they were going through hard times as a child, they depended on their talent to bring them success. It made them a stronger person and made them feel secured about their achievements. When sometimes life did not go their way because of their lost of parent, their provider, their support, their protector, when they lost them, they though to themselves am I not safe? Probably they had though they would never be the same without their parents or parent. Which I think if they had not got the motivation to become the person they are today, they would not be known as a famous person today. They probably were thinking too, that they made their parents proud though out their achievements. It does not mean if someone loses a parent they become a famous person one day, it just simple means those people never gave up and use that lost to become a stronger and successful person which they are today.

    Talent Code Chapter 4

    Topic Sentence
The three rules you must follow to perform deep practice correctly are Chunking it up, Repeat it, and Learn to feel it.

    Detail
Deep practice is a type of practice that allows someone to learn at a faster pace in a shorter amount of time. In order to perform deep practice one must fallow the three rules. The first rules is “chunking,” which means to identify important elements and group them into a meaningful framework, in other words just take it one step at a time. One example of chunking is the Meadowmount School of music where most students will learn a years worth of material in seven weeks.. Here the teacher break down sheet of music rhythms into horizontal strips, place them in an envelope and have the students pull them out in random order. They absorb the music as a whole, break it down into chunks then slow it down in order to practice the peace perfectly The second rule is to “repeat’ the skill you are trying to acquire. This does not mean just to consistently repeat any action, but to be in the sweat spot of training, which is to be at the edge of your capability, attentively building and honing circuits. Just like most expect who practice three to five hours a day building and honing their circuits, daily practice matter. The last rule is “ feel it,” which means you must create a balance point where you can sense the error when it comes in order to correct it. It’s like reaching for something and falling short then reaching again.

    Quote
Daniel Coyle, in Talent Code says “Baby steps are the royal road to skill” page (94)

    Analysis
In Talent Code Daniel Coyle breaks down how to learn and perfect skill. The quote means to not try and rush honing a skill or expect skill to come by just merely performing it. He explains that there are many steps in preparing to deep practice. Like the Meadowmount students they didn’t just practice reading and playing music. They broke the music down in steps, into rhythm, and slowly practicing it while correcting there mistakes as they went along. Allowing them to deep practice playing music. They took there time breaking the music into section, repeating it over and over, listening for mistakes, and building and honing their circuits. Through chunking, repeating, and learning to feel it, the Meadowmount students deep practice playing and reading music.

Detail: This chapter discusses how some companies go from being good to being great while other companies maintain being good and stay at the same level.Making a comparison of how great geniuses dont need a great team they just need a couple people with brillant ideas to succeed.Fixed mindset people always want to be on top and be compared to other people so they can seem like if they are better. They mentioned that mindset leaders were leaders who where not set to be leaders. They had no interest in improving themselves they only wanted to enjoy the only thing they love.

Instead of being withh a huge group of people that do me no good and won't help me succeed as a company.A fixed mindset leader is the type of person i can descrive my self as. Detail
As we read in chapter 5 Enron a very successful company had gone belly up. According to Malcolm Gladwell American corporations had become obsessed with talent. Enron focused mainly on hiring people with degrees, paying them big, and focused mainly on talent. That is where he went wrong, doing that pretty much forced everyone of his employees into a fixed mindset. The employees settled and never tried to out due themselves. There for his company failed. We also touched bases on a study from the students of University of Hong Kong where everything is English. Students with the fixed mindset refused to take a risk at learning and improving their English.

    Quote
In mindset by Carol S. Dweck Gladwell says " This : Talent mind-set" is the new orthodoxy of American management" Carol S. Dweck says" It created the blueprint for the Enron culture- and sowed the seeds of its demise.

    Analysis
When in a fixed mindset you will never get yourself far. Just Like Enron the employees would not push themselves because they did not want to seem untalented. They were praised for their talents not the talents for their jobs. When things got hard they did not know what to do. The students from Hong Kong university was asked to write about their experience to another student at a different school and 40 percent of them lied about their scores- always in an upward direction. Being in the fixed mindset makes having flaws untolerable.

    Mindset Chapter 5

    Topic Sentence:
As we all know by now there are two different types of mindset, the growth mindset and fixed mindset. When it comes to business it is important to have a growth mindset in order to have your company flowing the right way. If you have a fixed mindset you are just setting your business for failure.

    Detail:
In chapter five they are discussing how Enron the company of the future had gone belly-up. The reason for this was because people had fixed mindset. They only recruited the big talent, those with the fancy degrees. They only looked for people those people they thought were natural in business just like in sports. They forced their employees to look very talented which is what lead them to a fixed mindset. The employees didn’t accept they were wrong they didn’t want to learn new things. They don’t want to lose that image of themselves as the person with great talent. As we all know a company that will not correct their mistakes wont success. Jim Collins set out to discover what made some companies good to great, what made allowed be great and stay at that position. He figured out that those with the growth mindset keep on learning not really worried about their fixed abilities, they understand their mistakes and improve. For example Jack Welch took over GE when it was valued at fourteen billion dollars, twenty years later it was valued at $490 billion. He ran his business very differently than others, he did not take all the credit for the success of the company he knew that without his colleagues and friends. He learned how to be a great leader.

    Quote:
In Mindset, Carol S. Dweck says, true self-confidence is “the courage to be open-to welcome change and new ideas regardless of their source.” (127)

    Analysis:
I believe this quote is trying to state that in order to be successful one needs to be open to new thing and accept change is good. There is no one better than one or less than one. For example Jack Welch, he knew in order to have a great business he needed help from the others and he needed to accept that he was not a great leader at the beginning but slowly her learned how to be a great leader. He had a growth mindset, he pushed himself to success. His employees also had growth mindset they did not just believe that with their talent they were going to be successful. The companies that fail are because they have a leader with a fixed mindset. They are the ones that want to be above it all and are blinded by the talent they believe they have. People with the fixed mindset don’t think there is a need to learn new thinks because they believe they know it all. They are not willing to look at their weakness as an opportunity to become successful.

    Chapter 5

    Topic sentence

In growing mindset we see the people how they try their best to be successful.

    Details

Dunlap deeply misunderstood Michael Jordan and Bruce Springsteen. Both of these superstars reached the pinnacle and stayed there a long time because they constantly dug down, faced challenges, and kept growing. Al Dunlap thought that he was inherently superior, so he opted out of the kind of learning that would have helped him succeed. Jack Welch was not a perfect person, but he was devoted to growth. This devotion kept his ego in check, kept him connected to reality, and kept him in touch with him in touch with his humanity. In the end, it made his journey prosperous and fulfilling for thousands of people.

    Quote

“The solution lies in making better cars in this country, not in angrier excuses about Japan.”

    Analysis

The American auto industry was facing its biggest challenge ever. The challenge and
delivering better cars, Iaccoca, mired in his fixed mindset, delivered blame and excuses.
In fact, he was shrinking into the insulated, petty, and punitive tyrant he had accused
Henry Ford of being. Not only he was firing people who were critical of him, he had
done little to reward the workers who had sacrificed so much to save the company. Even
when the money was rolling in, he seemed to have little interest in sharing it with them.

Deep practice made South Koreans on LPGA Tour won Russians in WTA Top 100.

    D
When Se Ri Pak was twenty years old, she won the McDonald’s LPGA Championship and became a national icon in 1998. Before her, South Korean did not have succeeded in golf. Until in 2002, South Korean on LPGA Tour lost to Russians in WTA Top 100. However, started in 2003, LPGA Tour won WTA Top 100. South Koreans started increasing their scores little by little and later on, the gap between the scores of the South Koreans and Russians became larger. The reason was that more deep practice helped them to win.

    Q
In The Talent Code, Daniel Coyle says “This is not because the inspiration was weaker at the start and got progressively stronger, but for a more fundamental reason: deep practice takes time (ten thousand hour, as the retrain goes).”(99)

    A
As much time people spent on deep practice, they would grow their skills and also their talent would spread out more. It doesn’t mean that people do not have to do deep practice if they have talent. Talent is also deep practice. Although people have talent, they might not spread out their talent well without deep practice. Deep practice helps people to grow their talent and skills even though it might take much time.

    Mindset Chapter 5

    Topic Sentence
In this Chapter of Mindset it talks about how it takes a person with the growth mindset to run a business or to turn it around to make it into a successful business.

    Details
It talk about different CEO's with the fixed mindset, that were in charge of their company and how they became very unsuccessful. To run a company and to make profit you need to be in the growth mindset. One can't always follow their own rules and they need to bend their own rules to run their company better. This chapter showed us if you're in the fixed mindset you would not be able to run a company that long and you will lose profit.

    Quote
In Mindset, Carol S. Dweck says "But by putting complete faith in talent, Enron did a fatal thing: It created a culture that worshiped talent, thereby forcing employees to look and act extraordinarily talented."(108-109)

    Analysis

Carlos Dweck says by putting all this talent together it created chaos, to see who would come out as number 1 and help Enron the most. This idea of Enron did not really work because all of their employees were against each other instead of working together. This just a competition with each other. By doing this it just made them seem who was the most successful out of the company. All of their employees had fixed mindset, which made their business worse. If each employee had the growth mindset, this company would of been running fine because instead of giving up when one of their co-workers gave out a good idea, they could try to make something else better for the company.

    Mindset Chapter 5

    Topic Sentence:
It is better for managers to have a growth mindset in order to achieve human development and to provide a working environment in which individuals can learn and grow.

    Details:
Studies and research have revealed that many managers do not believe in personal change. These fixed-mind managers rate employees from the start as either “competent” or “incompetent”. They do not accept feedback and offer very little developmental coaching if employees ever improve. This creates a stale work environment in which nobody is able to grow and develop. Managers with a growth mindset offer a more exciting and growing work environment. They believe that talent is only the starting point. They value human development and the importance of learning and teaching.

    Quote:
Carol S Dweck in Mindset states “First, it means that our best bet is not simply to hire the most talented managers we can find and turn them loose, but to look for managers who also embody a grown mindset: a zest for teaching and learning, an openness to giving and receiving feedback, and an ability to confront and surmount obstacles” (pg 141).

    Analysis:
Without this growth mindset many corporate training programs become ineffective. Managers who take part in presenting skills as learnable are able to achieve greater results. Their training and coaching draws out the qualities needed in order to perform successfully. This way, employees are able to learn and improve their skills. These kinds of managers are ideal for a company because the company benefits from the growth and development of its employees. Ultimately, these managers create a positive work environment that benefits every individual and the company as a whole.

Growth mindsets do better in business.
    Details
According to chapter 5 Mr. Robert Wood and Albert Bandura did a study on how a growth and fixed mindset would come about running a business. They set two groups of college students, one group of fixed and another of growth mindset. They had to arrange certain employees in certain areas and make sure there “Furniture Company” ran well. The Growth mindset learned from their mistakes by looking back at their feedback and changing their strategies. They learned from their mistakes and understood better ways to run their business and motivate their employees to do better, more progress was made from this. The fixed mindset however did not push them selves and ‘did not profit from their mistakes.
    Quote
In Mindset, Carol Dweck says “Not worried about measuring-or protecting-their fixed abilities, they looked directly at their mistakes, used the feedback and alternate their strategies accordingly.” (111)
    Analysis
This quote says it all. It’s true what they say about growth mindsets, they like to push and learn from their mistakes. This is good for business obviously now that it has been tested by Robert Wood and Albert Bandura. Costumer service is very important in order to get profit and profit is everything. So it’s always good to know and learn how to adapt to situations in order to keep your costumer satisfied. This is what fixed mindset failed to do and growth mindset didn’t.

    Talent Code Chapter 5

    Topic Sentences
Motivation is sustained and created through ignition which fuels deep practice.

    Detail
In order to perform deep practice one must have energy, passion, and commitment, in other words one must be motivated. Ignition is what supplies energy, while deep practice translates that energy over time into forward progress. One of many ways someone could be motivated or inspired is from witnessing an epic achievement, in turn wanted that same glory for them selves. An example would be seeing Roger Bannister a skinny Oxford medical student who was the first person to run the mile under four mines. Most people deemed it impossible to go under four mines for a mile. But some how he achieved it. Not long after a man named John Landy from Australia achieved the same by breaking the four min barrier that so many thought was impossible. Because of Roger Bannister achievement, people around the world where ignited and now said to them selves “ If he can do it, so can I” Hence giving them energy and motivation to deep practice.

    Quote
In Talent Code Daniel Coyle, says, “Ignition is strange concept because it burns just out of our awareness, largely with in our unconscious minds” page (101/102)

    Analysis
In chapter five Daniel Coyle explains how ignition works and what it’s used for. The quote means that ignition best happens when you not thinking about it. Through you own awareness you see and find motivation that drives you to deep practice. Witnessing someone else achieve something that catches your eye is what ignites you to be inspired or motivate you to pursue a sir tent skill or long term goal. Just like Roger Bannister ignited the world to practice harder to achieve what he had done (breaking four mines for the mile.) Through ignition you are given energy to pursue deep practice, which is what sustains your motivations

    Details:
It does not matter what race or gender we are motivation while we deep practice is what well help us the most. After years of deep practice will we finally reach our potential.Anyone can reach their potential just as the Tennis players from Russia and South Korea appeared on both the LPGA Tour and the WTA tour.In just ten years the they increased almost a dozen every 5 years. They had to work hard to
become their best. They are women competing in a golf tour if they can be successful that just shows how deep practice and ignition are key to reaching your potential.

    Quote:
In Talent Code Daniel Coyle says "ignition and deep practice work together to produce skill".

    Analysis:
This quote is very true without deep practice and ignition you will never reach your potential. Not just in the example I used of the female folders appearing on the tour, but it in everything such as sports, school, and work.Once you deep practice you must have motivation without it you will not succeed.Everything requires deep practice this quote really speaks to everyone who wants to succeed in sports, school, or work. This is very essential and should be taken advantage of.Deep practice will not be easy it will take years to reach your potential.Once you master your skill deep pratice will no longer be hard for that certain skill.

    Fixed Mindset/Brutal bosses
Sometimes the victims are the people the bosses consider to be less
talented. Often the victims are the most competent people. These are
the ones who pose the greatest threat to a fixed mindset boss. Iocca
played games to keep his executives off balance. This is the kind of
abuse that represents a bosses desire. To enhance their own feelings
of power, competence, and value at the subordinate expense. Iocca
threw christmas parties for the companies elite. He would present
himself with an expensive gift, wich executives laterhad to pay for. A
man who though he had the right to anything. he sorrounded himself
with flatters who extolled their virtues and hid from problems, no
wonder he felt invisable. With this mindset he was completely
fulfilled. In Mindset, by Daniel Coyle he says," Leaders feel they are
inherently better then others" pg 123 This is true, controlling
leaders do not care about nothing but themselves. When instead one can
work as a team to progress the company. People with the fixed mindset
want to compare themselves with people who were worse then they were.
If leaders are really concerned about performance, obe does not pick
on who is performing best. But if leaders are concerned on competent
they do. Everything starts to revolve around pleasint the boss. When
bosses become controlling and abusive they put everyone in a fixed
mindset. As well instead of learning and growing and moving the
company foward, everyone starts to be worried about being judged. It
is hard courage and innovation to survive company wide, fixed mindset.

    Chapter 6
If You Have to Work at It, It Wasn't Meant to Be

    Topic Sentence:
When faced with relationship challenges people with fixed-mindsets tend to give up and let their relationships fall apart.

    Details:
Dweck writes about a couple, Charlene and Max, who met and fell in love instantly. Overtime, their moods and personalities started to clash. Their problems persisted and friends tried to convince them to work it out. However they both felt that if the relationship were the right one, they wouldn’t have to work at it. They eventually grew apart and broke up. They both had a fixed mindset and didn’t see a need to put in effort to save their relationship. They followed the typical fixed mindset belief that if you’re compatible, everything should just come naturally.

    Quote:
Carol S Dweck in Mindset explains “As with personal achievement, this belief—that the success should not need effort—robs people of the very thing they need to make their relationship thrive. It’s probably why so many relationships go stale—because people believe that being in love means never having to do anything taxing “(p 150).

    Analysis:
Carol S Dweck explains why relationships tend to fall apart. Individuals with a fixed mindset form relationships and determine whether it is “meant-to-be”. They feel that if it is true love good things will happen automatically. Similarly, just as they have a fixed mentality about themselves, they often have fixed mentalities about their partners and relationships as a whole. This makes it difficult for them to keep a relationship strong. Their mindset prevents them from communicating and working hard towards the success of the relationship. They eventually give up and the relationship fails. As with Charlene and Max, if they had a growth mindset they probably would have been able to work things out. In order to keep a relationship healthy and strong, one must accept the flaws and issues and deal with them accordingly. No problem will resolve itself magically, no matter how in love the two individuals may be.

If they can do it, so can I

    Details
When in Oxford Ca on 1954, an Oxford medical student named Rodger Bannister became the first human to do a mile under four minutes. The sports illustrated label this act as the single greatest athletic accomplishment of the twentieth century, soon Bannister accomplishment was yet again broken weeks later when an Australian named John Landy, also broke the four minute barrier, after that within three years, about seventeen runners mark their names in the records books who also broke the four minute. Now that this indestructible record has been broken, it led a new doorway for runners to try and beat the four minute mile. The most recently fastest runner in the mile has the time of 3:43.13, all cause of one person who ignited the challenge set upon on others.

    Quote.
In Talent code, Daniel Coyle says “Growing skill, as we’ve seen, requires deep practice. But deep practice isn’t a piece of cake: It requires energy, passion, and commitment. (98)

    Analysis
This quote should be an alarm clock, a gigantic sign in the wall, or a be use in hypnosis. Both Coyle and Dweck must have met up at a restaurant to compare notes. This act is seen everywhere from Meadowmount School of Music to the streets of brazil. When people where in their toddler age, they would see an adult doing something unusual to them like making a slam dunk, playing rapidly on the guitar, doing a kickflip off the ten stair, etc. then that’s when the spark in their mind starts to burn and try’s to mimic what the adult is doing. The kids soon starts to fall in love into something they never done before, so they soon start making a commitment to themselves to be just like that one person did or emulate their skill. So they start using the energy, passion, and commitment to deep practice and surpass their teachers in another level. That’s how Se Ri Pak and Rodger Bannister started by making a commitment, they achieve their dream and left a door open for future kids who hope to accomplish what these two have done.

    Talent code Chapter # 6

    Topic Sentence
Could one sentence truly ignite a talent?

    Details
Dr.Carol Dweck has started an experiment with four hundred New York fifth graders with easy puzzle problem to solve. Once the students completed their tasks, they get their results on how well they did. But the trick is that how the researchers told the students, the students were told based on two things. It was either “you must be smart at this” (fixed mindset) or “you must have worked really hard” (growth mindset). The researchers then gave them a test again but this time ask if they want it to the puzzle again or do a different one. Turns out that the kids whose effort were praised wanted to do the different puzzle while the kids praised for their intelligence wanted to the puzzle again. Next all the students received a difficult puzzle and the results came out that the growth minded student did thirty percent better than a fixed mindset student who did twenty percent worse than their original score.

    Quote
In Talent code, Daniel Coyle says “When we use the term motivational language, we are generally referring to language that speaks of hopes, dreams and affirmations”. (137)

    Analysis
From this quote, speaking to someone is a way to ignite their ambition to become one of the greatest of all time in their own sport. But depending on how you say it to the person and how they react to that praise. So just by praising someone who has already “got the talent” they become into a fixed mindset into believing that they can do it already like in their sleep, but once the results comes in and the person doesn’t believe what came out. With the fixed mindset, they will feel that they’re not special enough and that they will stay like that for a long time. But if a person praises someone for their time, effort, and passion for their sport, they will feel already accomplished and be eager enough to take on the next challenge. If they fail, they will continue on to improve their skill until they achieved their goal.

    Mindset Ch 6

People with the growth mindset move on, while people with the fixed mindset hold on to it.

Both growth and fixed mindsets have been hurt in a relationship. People with the growth mindset let it go and learn from the experience. They do not let themselves down they continued strong. People with the fixed mindset do not let it go, they live with it. They only hope and think for the previous partners to get hurt just like they hurt them.

In Mindset, Carol S. Dweck says “For people with the growth mindset, the number one goal was forgiveness” Pg 146

People with the growth mindset forgive even though they have been hurt deeply. Forgiveness lets people move on. They see everything as a positive learning experience. They hope for happiness towards the other person. By doing this they heal their pain with friends and loved ones and the process is less painful.

    Mindset Chapter 6

    Topic Sentence:
As human that we I’m sure we have been in love before and have had our hearts broken by someone. We all deal with these emotions in different ways those with the fixed mindset deal with is in a negative way, they feel the need to get revenge and those with growth mindset deal with it in a positive way, they believe it’s about forgiving and moving on.

    Details:
Each mindset dealt with break-ups very differently. The fixed mindset people felt judge by getting rejected by their partners. They felt as if they were unlovable. Those with the fixed mindset can not heal the wounds their partners have left them with, this is why they want to get revenge and hurt their ex partner as much as they are hurt. They are satisfied knowing the other person is as miserable as them. Some of those with the fixed mindset thought revenge was sweet. Then there is those with the growth mindset which think in a more positive way, a lot different then those with the fixed mindset. The people with the growth mindset felt it was all about forgiving, understanding and moving on. They took what had happened as a learning experience They felt they learned more about themselves and who was right for them. Their number one goal is forgiveness. They don’t live in the past all they want is to focus on moving forward and healing without revenge. They take the heartbreak experience as a way to improve their relationship in the future.

    Quote:
In Mindset, Carol S. Dweck quotes a man “That relationship and how it ended really taught me the importance of communicating. I used to think love conquers all, but now I know it needs a lot of help” (145)

    Analysis:
When it comes down to relationships I know we all have had our hearts broken but in order to heal and become a better person we need to have a growth mindset. Having a fixed mindset will never give you the opportunity to know what having a great relationship means. Those with the fixed mindset will end up staying alone or will have unhealthy relationships. In order to have a healthy stable relationship we need to have the growth mindset. Forgiveness is what will you the strength to move on and forget. Revenge is never the solution it will only give you more pain and will turn you into a bitter person. We should learn from the experience rather than trying to make things work when there is no hope to the relationship. We need to take every heartbreak as a lesson to better ourselves and understand what we want or don’t want in a person. If we have a fixed mindset we will just become a bitter person. There is no perfect relationship we have to accept we may fail in some relationships but the key is to learn from it and become a better person. Having a growth mindset is what will give you the ability to communicate and make a better and stronger relationship.

As one woman said: “I am no saint, but I knew for my own peace of mind that I had to
forgive and forget. He hurt me but I had a whole life waiting for me and I’ll be damned if
I was going to live it in the past. One day I just said, ‘Good luck to him and good luck to
    me.’ ”

    Analysis

Because of their growth mindset, they did not feel permanently branded. Because of it,they tried to learn something useful about them selves and relationships, something they could use toward having a better experience in the future. And they knew how to move on and embrace that future.
In the growth mindset, there may still be that exciting initial combustion, but people in
this mindset don’t expect magic. They believe that a good, lasting relationship comes from working through inevitable differences.

Shyness with a fixed mindset can hold people back from making friends and developing relationships more than being in a growth mindset.

    Details:
Shyness with a fixed mindset makes you concerned about judgment. When concerned about judgment, it can make you feel self conscious and anxious. Shy fixed mindset people want to avoid meeting someone, who might be more socially skilled than they were. The shy growth minded take control of there shyness, and they meet people. They let there nerves settle down. The relationships proceed just as it would for anybody else.

    Quote:
Carol S. Dweck said in Mindset”Shyness harmed the social interactions of people with the fixed mindset but did not harm the social relationships of people with a growth mindset.”(pg.163)

    Analysis:
People who are shy fixed minded, there main concerned is being judged, over all there the ones judging themselves. When they avoid meeting and socially with someone who may be more socially skilled, there missing an opportunity to increase there social skills and have more relationships. Developing relationships in a shy growth mindset is more rewarding compared to a shy fixed mindset, where they are held back feeling self conscious and anxious.

mindset in love or not.and how to understand love and relationships.
We all have different relationships in life, I learned about relationships, and how they roll in real life, she always talk about professional in different fields however, she had not talk about normal people in relationships, I like this chapter, I re- insurance what I know about relationships, it teaches you steps to have a better relationship with humans in this planned we all love. On our everyday relationships with your significant others, our with our family and friend. I like that it takes step by step to teach us that different important details to have a grow relationship in our life. We see a couple kissing and we think they are the happiest couple however, they look but we don’t know what there life is behind doors. Having a grow mindset help us developed in the relationship, what you like and what you don’t like about your partner. It talks that some one with a grow mindset learns to love your flaws. I learned that on this earth nothing is happily ever after, we need to water that plans daily to get where we want to be, also communication is number one in a relationship.

    Quote:
    Mindset Carol s. Dweck, Ph.D. page 153
People with thre grow mindset, on the other hand, can see their partner’s imperfection and still think they have a fine relationship.

    Reflection

My reflection on chapter six, made me understand my pass relationships, and also in my present I had made mistakes. I think that my boyfriend and my family know what I want, or what I expect. When in reality I need to let them now, because they are not mind readers, I enjoy this chapter it talks about not agreeing with anybody if you don’t think they are right. And also let others know what you like. In relationships we blame the other person when we are not compatible. However, we can be adults and move on with our life, and this is the way to learn. Who loves you, haves to love you for who you are, they cant change you. We can change little imperfection, but not that soul you have.

T.S: A Growth mindset develops a better relationship.

    Details:
    1. A fixed mindset always end up with a bad ending relation toward one another.
    2. Reason why is because a fixed mindset thinks that if their love one is right for them, they dont need to try.
    3. A fixed mindset thinks everything has to be perfect to think this is the right person for them.
    4. The difference between a fixed mindset and a growth mindset in a relationship is how they deal with their love ones and how they deal with them when it ends.
    5. A fixed mindset feels judged and labeled by rejection.
    6. A fixed mindset gives them no room for healing their wounds.
    7. Instead they think of taking revenge.
    8. An example of a fixed mindset is a woman named Lydia.
    9. Lydia, who was a girl that moved to New York and felt lonely because she knew nobody.
    10. Until she met a man named Jack, and instantly it clicked in her head that he was the right one for her.
    11. She thought she would be with Jack forever and they lived a happy 2 years together until one day, Jack left her.
    12. Ever since then, all she could have think of is how to get revenge.
    13. Now a growth mindset thinks that relationship is developed.
    14. they think that relationship always will have problems but, how they deal with the problem and solve it is a growth mindset.
    15. when a relationship ends, instead of revenge, they forgive and forget.
    16. Forgiving and forget, allows them to move on and find solutions so that theyre next relationship wont end the same way.
    17. No matter how bad a relationship ends, they forget and move on.
    18. An example of a growth mindset is woman named Cathy.
    19. Her husband left her after twenty-three years of marriage and on top of that she got in to an accident.
    20. She forgot about her last husband and went clubbing and that is where she met her future husband.
    21. Her pain of her husband leaving did not effect her and put her down.
    22. Instead, she forgave and forget to move on.
    23. As a result, she found someone better.

    Quote:
In Mindset, Author Carol Dweck says, "Tout comprendre c'est tout pardonner." (pg.145)

    Analysis:
    1. The quote is in french.
    2. In english, its translated, "To understand all is to forgive all."
    3. This is what a growth mindset person has.
    4. They may be sad about their love ones leaving them, but they understand and just forgave them.

    Mindset chapter 6
Relationships: Mindsets in love (or not)

The experiences of disappointments and heartbreaks in relationships scar people and holds them back to have a better relationship in the future. Will others are able to move on and learn from it.

After interviewing a hundred people they find out that people with fixed and grown mindset take a break up differently. A fixed mind set person will take it as permanent labeled "unlovable". Fixed mindset people will keep a bitterness feeling and they only thing they can think of is revenge. Will the grown mindset people just move on and try to learn from it. Even though they get hurt they know is not their fault that did not work out and they try to fix what they did, so in their future relationship they do not make the same mistake.

In Mindset, Carol S. Dweck say " to understand all is to forgive all" pg.145

It can be hard to be break up with somebody. And sometimes people think is the end of the world and blame themselves. Sometimes it was just not mean to be and maybe there is somebody better out there for us. Siting in the couch eating ice cream is not going to help us get over somebody or find somebody either. Understand why it happen and know is not our fault will make everything easy. Move on and learn from it will help us in our next relationship and we will know what not to do.

Growth minded people showed greater social skills than fixed mindset people.

    D
The shy growth minded people showed greater social skills, were more likable, and created a more enjoyable interaction. They looked on social situations as challenges. Although they felt anxious, the growth mindset people actively welcomed the chance to meet someone new. The shy growth mindset people take control of their shyness. Therefore, they go out and meet new people. Their relationships proceed normally. The shyness does not tyrannize them. However, the shy fixed people wanted to avoid meeting someone who might be more socially skilled than they were. They said that they were more worried about making mistakes. For the fixed mindset people, the shyness takes control. This keeps them out of social situations with new people, and when they are in them, they cannot let down their guard and let go of their fears.

    Q
In Mindset, Dr. Carol S. Dweck says “One embraced the challenge and the other feared the risk.”(164).

    A
Although both growth mindset people and fixed mindset people have shyness, their acting is different. The mindset people are more social, greater relationships, and have more friends. However, the fixed mindset people have less community, not civilization, and not sociable. The reason for the mindset people are more sociable is that they control their shyness. They try to fix their shyness but the fixed minded people do not try. This is the biggest reason between people who try to fix their mind, and who avoid their problem. If people want to have more sociable, then they need to have growth mindset.

What can mindsets tell you about shyness?
    Details:
Many people are shy, both growth and fixed mindset, however they respond different and overcome in different ways. Being shy can hold you back from meeting new people and developing new relationships. People worry about being judged, avoid eye contact, feel anxious. Jennifer Beer studied hundreds of people by recording there actions with other people. It turns out that people with fixed mindsets are more likely to be shy. This would make sense due to the fact that fixed mindsets are scared of judgment. Growth minded shy people would only be shy for a few minutes and after that would show great social skills, were more likeable, and created a more enjoyable interaction. Fixed mindset shy people are scared to meet anyone with more social skills than them. They were more worried about making mistakes.
    Quote:
In Mindset Carol Dweck says,”So the fixed-and growth- mindsets people confronted the situation with different attitudes. One embraced the challenge and the other feared the risk” (164)
    Analysis:
I like my quote because I feel like it summarizes everything into that. I thought it was an interesting experiment that Jennifer Beer performed on both of the mindsets. I think I would fall under the growth mindset on this one. Even though I am shy I can get comfortable really quick. I would assume that fixed mindset people have a harder time finding friends or being in a relationship. Beers experiment showed that fixed mindset people had a hard time controlling there shyness and growth mindset would be able to control there shyness.

A relationship does not come natural or works like magic. Effort from both has to be put in a relationship to keep on the right track. Both have to meet eachother half ways to help one another, with whatever situation they are in. Without communication a realtionship will not get far. Communication is needed no one reads minds. By understanding eachother both can learn together and grow together as one.

The Mindset of a champion is strength, wiliness, passion and deep practice.

    Details:
Wilma Rudolph was the fastest female runner back in the 1960’s. She was a premature baby and was number twentieth of twenty-two children. She was constantly sick and always in and out of Hospitals. At the age of four she had several life threating illnesses that almost ended her young life. She was told that her left leg was almost paralyzed. She was told that she might not ever get full gain of her left leg. Year after year she went under intensive physical therapy. At the age of twelve they removed her brace and began to walk normal. She had a rough childhood and despite all of her physical setbacks she continued on her physical therapy and her hard work paid off. She then enforced the life lesson to basketball and track. She never won a game and she always came in last in the race. She would practice and she became faster. Even then she would still come in last until one day she won. It was all the deep practice and all the hours she put into running.

    Quote:
In Mindset, the author says, “There is something about seeing myself improve that motivate and excites me” page 88.

    Analysis:
Despite her rough childhood and a nearly death experience Wilma Rudolph was able to accomplish gold medals. She was told that she might not ever gain full movement in her left leg and she overcame that. Intensive therapy and her wiliness of wanting to get better made her stronger. She was born a weak child all she knew was weakness and pain. Despite all that she had the strength to overcome all of her physical setbacks. Her character was built from the day she was born from having to be weakest to becoming a strong runner.

Me,Argie and Luz kept looking for a camera man because we all wanted to make shout out to our families. We were stalking the camera men. I also helped as an escort for little children. I loved doing that. The children were so happy and excited especially when they got there shoes. I wanted a pair of free jordans! I was not what i was expecting i thought we were going to be serving homeless people. Over i had fun and iam glad I went. Also we forgot Pilkki that was funny!

    Talent Code Chapter 6

    Topic Sentence
Skip Engblom helped the Z-Boys become greater surfer and skaters through motivational language.

    Detail
Motivational languages are little words and phrases that praise one for there effort. Their phrases like “good job” keep up the good work” and “ way to go bro” that helps ignite one to push for greater achievements. Skip Engblom not only opened his doors to the Z-Boys by letting them hang around his skate-shop in Santa Monica, he praised them for their effort. For example, one Saturday at a surf contest Engblom was coaching the Z-Boys and their was this guy who was supposed to be a big shot pro that was surfing in the first heat. So Engblom decided to put his smallest surfer, a little kid named Jay Adam. Jay Adam’s did not believe he could win but Engblom did. So Engblom went up to the big shot guy, right where Jay could here him and said to the guy,” Don’t worry bud. You don’t stand a chance.” These few words that Jay heard his couch say about him gave Jay hope and motivation to believe in himself to win the competition. Jay went out and slaughter the guy. All the kids saw this and went, whoa. Witnessing what Jay did also motivated all the kids to do better in surfing and in skating.

    Quote
Daniel Coyle in Talent Code says that Skip Engblom says, “What skill-building really is, is confidence-building.”

    Analysis
What Engblom did was help the Z-Boys believe in themselves. Through encouragement and faith in his boys, Engblom built up motivation. Everyday they would practice and Engblom would just watch and say “good job” or “nice shred” to push them psychologically to improve. This helped the Z-Boys to later make history at the 1975 Del Mar skateboarding contest. They believed in themselves because Engblom motivated them through motivational language.

I must say i was very much surprised over how many people were in line waiting to receive free stuff. Although i did not get to talk to a lot of the people that where coming through i enjoyed it very much. i saw many family that had very little. Some family barley had cloths to cover them up from the cold and some just looked beat up. My job was packing the goodies bags for the kids and stocking up the tables with supplys for the other volenteers could pack the bags/backpacks them with goodies. It was pretty hot and i got a little tired because i was running up and down trying to open boxes and get the trash out of the way for every one could move freely with in our area. But over all i loved it. i got to hang out with my class mates and bond with them a lot more. I saw a new side from each one. at the end of the day i felt very good about my self because i did something for someone else that was less fortunate then i am. Plus the free In-N-Out made it all worth it.

Thanks Mr. Hsiao for the invite!!!!!!

This field trip was amazing. I think it was a great experience for all. Not only was i surprised at how many people were there at 8 in the morning but when we were leaving there was like 5x more people. Its soooo crazy how many people dont have the thing that we do. Makes me not want to take anything for granted anymore. The best part of my experience was the Aliah. She was a 5 year old little girl who at first was terrified to leave her father. But the end of our little trip as i was giving her back to her dad she hugged me as if she has known me forever and said thank you. I felt like crying. Made me feel good to have at least made a difference in 1 little girls life. This experience is definitely something i want to do again. Im thinking about going down on thanksgiving to help out.

I don't know how i can express myself on how this field trip impacted me. It was an life changing trip, even thou it was one of the longest days of my life, it was all worth it to see the smiles of all the children on skid row who have nothing. It brought me joy to see them happy because the stuff most of us take for granted, they have little of. The whole day was breath taking, i also got to spend it with my friends from class. I was a little scared near the end of the trip because i coulnt find anyone and freaked out for a second. I was thinking crap did they leave me haha, but no we almost left pilki which was funny as hell no lie. But after it all it was worth all of it to help this in need, i hope to do it again next year and even help out for thanksgiving too.(still thinking about it)

All I have to say is having to wake up extra early to meet up by 6:30 am was well worth it. I did not expect to see a bus full of students to show up. That just goes to show that there are still some good people in this world. Who, are willing to help out with nothing in return. It was pretty sad to see many families who are in need. I saw this on the news, about 5000 kids who missed school for this event. If it was not for Cerritos College NOT Citrus College, who knows what Fred Jordan mission would have done. We put our all to this event and worked hard. We got everything together. I was jumping from station to station, lifting boxes full of clothes and setting them up in sizes. Bagging hygene products such as tooth brushes and toothpaste wich I personally cannot live without. To filling up back packs with school supplies, it definately felt never ending. I wanted to leave feeling good about myself, and not feeling tired because of all the labor. Argie, Natalie, and I decided we were done, and began to escort the children. As exciting this sounded it was not fun or easy. I must say I am not ready for kids of my own. The first set of kids I was given was 6 brothers and sisters, at the end of the route I only had 4 brothers and sisters. Boy was their mother angry, man was I scared! The importance was to see the kids smiling filled with joy. For my second set of kids I teamed up with Natalie it seemed easier for me. Natalie is going to be a good mother to her children, she is really good with kids. Foot locker came thru they were really nice, and let the kids choose wichever shoes they wanted. All smiles priceless moments, they made my day. There was this little girl named vanessa she was 9 yrs old. She wanted to undress herself already, so she can wear her new dress. It was sooo cuuute. I felt bad leaving the kids when it came time for us to leave. Within those those couple of minutes of escorting them they took a place in my heart. I did not want to leave them, I even lost my appetite. This field trip definately leaves one to appreciate the things that one has in life. As we were leaving there were so many more families waiting in line. I really hopethey all got a pair of shoes atleast.

I must say this was a great experience. At first I was debating about going because It was very early in the morning but I am very glad I decided to go it was worth it no doubt about it. I could not believe how many people were already lined up when we got there. The looks on the kids face when they got all the goodies was PRICELESS. All the work we did as a team really paid off with the smile on those kids face. I have must respect for all those parents that will do whatever it takes to put a smile on their kids face. Looking at all those kids made me be grateful for what I have. I realized some of us take what we have for granted. The shoes, phone, car and clothes. When there are kids out there that will do anything just to have any pair of shoes. This has really had an impact on me, I am grateful that I was given this opportunity. I also enjoyed this field trip because I got to know some of my classmates much better. If I could do this again I will without hesitation.

All I have to say I am so glad I woke up at 4:45 to go to Fred Jordan Mission. It was a great experience I really enjoyed it. I was putting folders, pens and pencils inside the backpacks for the children. At the end I began to escort 3 children Gerardo, Danny, and Leslie they were extremely happy Leslie will just stare at me with a huge smile, they were very nice kids. Sadly I did not finish with the escort because we had to leave. Everything was very rewarding it made my day. I very much enjoyed going down to Skid Row, to help giveback. I helped with dividing the tooth brushes, tooth pastes, shampoos, and putting them into small bags. I also helped with putting school supplies into backpacks. This field trip was rewarding when seeing the children’s smiles as they get there hair cut, backpacks, and etc. I could not believe how long the line was, it broke my heart knowing they were in need of a simple backpack or pen, all the things were just a consume to having. I would have liked to say longer, I didn’t feel we were there an enough time to make a big difference. But I know every bit helps. I look forward to other rewarding fieldtrip in the near future.

It was very hard to wake up and get to the bus by 6:30. I almost missed the bus, but i made it on time. While going to Skid Row, I had a lot of time to bond with other people in the bus and got closer with my classmates. When I arrived at Skid Row, I was shocked on how many homeless families there were at the Fred Jordan Mission. I felt good about myself that I committed myself to wake up very early to help families that are having a hard time to take care of their families. My favorite part at Skid Row was escorting kids to get clothes, shoes, backpacks, shampoo, toothbrush and toothpaste. Seeing how happy kids were when they get stuff made myself who got nothing instead of using my energy to help these kids happy. The scariest part at the Fred Jordan mission was when the bus was leaving without me. Luckily my classmates figured out I was not on the bus so Mr. Hsiao waited for me. I had a fun experience that Skid Row and how good it feels to help the families that are in needs.

    Fred Jordan Mission

My impression of Fred Jordan Mission was one of a kind; I am a person that gives out when I have extra stuff. I usually give my extra clothes that do not fit (shrunk) to my relatives that are in need. I remember that I did a promise; my promise was that if I will get my notary license, my first check was to buy toys to children’s that are less fortunate. I remember the day like it was yesterday. I took my Notary test during the Christmas holidays and I passed the state exam. I got my first check, I went to buy toys for children’s of different ages. My parents were supported they where happy I was giving to others, they share this wonderful experience with me. I decided to take the toys to Tijuana Mexico. I was driving around in the poorest neighborhoods, and asking house by house if they had small children. I remember the children faces when I gave them there toy. All of the children that I gave them toys, where reflecting gratitude and happiness. It was that best feeling of my life. Fred Jordan Mission was a great experience, first of all it made me feel younger it remind me when I was in elementary. That was the only time I had field trips. At first I thought we where passing food to all the man and woman that are wondering in that streets of downtown Los Angeles. I had never heart of Fred Jordan Mission; my surprise was that once we got to downtown I saw a huge line of different families of different nationalities making line. They where making line to get free clothes, free bag packs and notebooks. I was amazed that foot locker was donating millions of shoes. What happened was that Mr. Hsiao Volunteer his class to help organize all that items that were donated to Fred Mission. All of the students that participated where doing different things, the guys where moving boxes and chairs, girls where opening boxes and filling the bag packs with an school folders and erasers. I help made the hygiene bags. We where moving fast that we accomplish to finish all the bags. It seemed that all the students where enjoying helping out. We also had fun because they where different television news cast, and we where all exited to come out in Channel 34 Univision. When they started passing out items, all the children’s and there parents enjoy an IN and OUT burger. Once they where done eating they got in line to obtain there items. Once they where ready to go in, parents where not allow to go with there children’s. Parents had to wait around the block for them .I volunteer to escort children in the mission; I was assign about six children’s per round. I had to ask t there waist, size and there top size. They also had the volunteers from foot locker measuring there shoes size, to make sure they would get the right shoe size. After they got there shoes the next station was the hygiene bag that included toothpaste, shampoo, and a toothbrush. The last station was the hair salon; who ever wanted a hair cut was welcome to get one. At the end children’s had to be return to there parents. That was our day helping the children in need and to put a smile on there faces.

Bullies and victims is not good, when you read it, it dangerous. It dangerous because of what the victim children might cause or do to themselves that bring out the rage and sadness in them. Some kids are victims during school, they get bullied by other kids who feels making fun of someone is funny. Even some teachers or staff at school don’t do anything about it because, either they don’t see it or they just say kids would be kids. It wasn’t kids would be kids when the columbine massacre happen, they could have prevented that if they had done something about it in the first and the very first problem in the first place. In Mindset, Carol S. Dweck says, “Sometimes it remains inside and can lead to depression and suicide. Sometimes it explodes into violence.” (page#169)
    A.
The quote I choose says all about a victim being bullied. They could been bullied at school, but I think it can happen anywhere. The quote says all in everyday life of our tragic victims loses a life and it makes me sad to hear. Bullying can be either from classmates, jobs, relationships, family, and it can maybe go on. The list things that can happen anywhere. All it takes is a bully to trigger an fixed minded person. Either they can switch the light on to either depression or revenge. Any of those bottoms is a key to a tragedy about to happen. We hear almost everyday about victims taking there life or someone life. And when something happened, adults in school decided now to take action and it leaves me the question that may or may not be answer. Where were they? When that person was being bullied or that person being abused in the relationship. The reason I brought up abused relationship because I feel those people abusing their partners may have been the victims themselves, but want to take their angry on their partner. The both may be different but the one thing they have in commend was they were victims, in some time in their lifetime. So remember if you see someone being bullied, help them out, don’t stand there and join that bully in the fun and games, because that victim might be a tragic accident or worst, could be the next massacre about to happen.

    Fred Jordan Mission

It was really hard to leave my bed this day because I was super sick, and it was super
cold. When I saw my classmates and Mr. Hsiao, I was super excited. I had well conversation with my friend. When we arrived to Fred Jordan Mission, I surprised how many homeless families are there. I really enjoyed this trip because I felt I did something to this families when I fixed handbags and I put pens and folders and pencil and a lot of thing. When I was helping my team work, I got super excited when they call my name. They say David the bags are here. I tried to take it super fast to the other table. I really enjoyed when I saw the people got expensive shoes like Jordan or Nike. I got surprised because this shoes over fifty dollars each one. I imagined how many families it was there. They are more than five thousand families. I thank God how this people got helped. After we finished helped them, we went to the food court. They gave us hamburger sandwich and chips and juice and fruit. it was really nice meal to me because it was my classmates with me. I was super happy when my friends talked to me in the table. When we finished eat, we walked to the bus. When we were living, I noticed Philty is not at the bus. We told Mr. Hsiao and he stopped the bus, and I called him and he was running. I really enjoyed this trip, and I wish to go again.

    Fred Jordan mission.
Fred Jordan mission was a very interesting experience for me and my classmates. I rarely do volunteer for these kinds of stuff but it felt pretty good. Waking up was a hard thing to do since I had to wake up around 5:30 to eat and get my stuff ready for school that day. Along the way there was some traffic but we manage to get there on time to Fred Jordan mission. When we arrive there, I saw a enormous crowd of people waiting in line to get free food from in and out, fresh new kicks from Foot locker, clothes, school supplies that came with backpacks like Dora the explorer, folders, pen, pencil, and have receive a bag of hygiene stuff. That crowd was hectic and I heard that they been waiting since the day before just to get their free stuff. I was also surprise on how many people came to help out at this event not just big corporations like In and out or Footlocker, but other schools that came to help out like the citrus college cosmetology students who came to give free haircuts to the crowd. I worked at helping put tooth brushes, tooth paste, shampoo, and conditioner in a goodie bag for people who needed and be a security guard for 5 minutes just to get people moving from the building so that people can leave happily with their free stuff. I also got to know other PSA members and students from different college which was a good thing but was even better when we all helped out at this event. It made me see that I can’t take the stuff I have for granted and that I should be thankful for actually having my stuff. This was a pretty good experience

Having to go on this field trip was a life experience. I'm still surprised how we woke up extra early just to have breakfast with Kassy,Brittany,Jesus,Robert, and Matt .Towards the end of the day every minute of every second that i woke up early it was all worth it.I emjoyed being a shaparon<--How ever u spell it..Having to see the look and facial expressions on the kids face was adorable. I learned how to appreciate i have now I need to stop being so picky .I just didn't really like the fact that majority of the teenagers were really beingg picky on such hectic moments like the ones there going thru. But on the otherhand being a volunteer was a great opportunity i am used to being part of the community but just doing things like these makes me want to get involved more

Talent Code Chapter seven: How to ignite a Hotbed

    Topic Sentence
How did KIPP started and what made them be successful in terms with students

    Details
KIPP started as an idea from Mike Feinberg and Dave Levin in the winter of 1993. Where they started off at a rocky road, there were in their early twenties, roommates, second year teachers at Houston Teach for America. Then they came up of an idea of creating KIPP thanks to beer and caffeine. Where they had classroom time, quality teachers, parental support, and administrative support. They started off as in a small room of Garcia Elementary school. They had used other people’s failed idea and gave that another shot, they had longer school days, shorter summer vacations, uniforms, and an efficient punishment and reward. Levin’s and Feinberg’s slogan is “Work hard, Be Nice”. Soon after the whole school year has come to an end, they’re students went from a fifty-three percent of passing state exams to ninety percent. So by looking at the results, Levin and Feinberg have been ignited into making their system big. They did everything it took to give their idea into a reality. Soon Levin went to the Bronx while Feinberg stayed in Houston. Their idea became more successful the second year that Gap have donated fifteen million dollars to the KIPP program thus making their dream into realty.

    Quote:
In Talent Code, Daniel Coyle states that “If we had to classify the primal cues the KIPP students received in those first few minutes, they would fall into three categories

    1. You belong in a group.
    2. Your group are together in a strange and dangerous new world.
    3. That new world is shaped like a mountain, with the paradise of college at the top.

    Anaylsis:
These three signals are just like the signals like in Brasil, Russia, and even Tom Sawyer story. The kids of KIPP are in a group where education is more value than money of world. The kids want to learn, be discipline, and go to the finish line of where they want to be which a University is. The group have similar regardless of where each individual want to end up at, if one student wants to go to university of Los Angeles or if another student want to go to University of Southern California. They will help each other out into getting their goal just like a soccer game where the midfielder pass the ball to the forward and score the winning goal for their team.

    TS:
Having a fixed mindset makes it harder to admit to your mistakes, and it can lead to failure.

    Details:
Enron was a successful company, but things did not work to well. Malcolm Gladwell American Corporation focused on talent. They focused mainly on people that had degrees, and talent. Rewarding them with big pay and that turned into an obsession. In doing this people started to get into a fixed mindset. The employees never tried to succeed further and that is where the company starting falling apart.

    Quote:
In Mindset by Carol S. Dweck says “As McLean and Elkind report, Enron recorded “millions of dollars in profit on a business before it had generated a penny in actual revenues.” Page 120

    Analysis:
Having a fix mindset does not allow you to be successful. You will stay at the same level and never achieve more than what you can do. Just like in Enron Company. They came in having all this knowledge, but once in the company there was no room for growth, because they felt that if they tried something new they would seem as if they did not have talent. There mindset had change from being a growth mindset to a fixed mindset.

    Fred Jordan Mission

What can I say about Fred Jordan Mission? I had fun waking up early for once and eating breakfast with my classmates. The ride over there seem for ever because there was traffic. Once when we got there I was confuse in what to do. At first I was putting chairs where they did not need to go but I fixed it after. After that I was zipping up bags for a while. Than after I saw that they needed chaperone for the kids I decided to help out. It seem like a lot of work but it wasn't. People from last year was saying it was a pain in the butt, but it was easy for me. When I was seeing the kids getting their new clothes and shoes it just made me feel grateful for the stuff that I have. Mr. Hsiao was right that going this trip will change your life and for me it did. It made me be grateful for all the little things I have. Even though my mom told me this every time I was ungrateful for the stuff I had, I need it to witness the less fortunate people that does not have a thing to be grateful for.

T.S:Two different points of view for two different mindsets.
Carol dweck mentions mention that his research has shown that the way u adopt your yourself affects the way you lead your life.Having a fixed mindset its like you setting your own limits . Dwecks says you think that you have a certain personality, certain amount of intelligence, and certain mortal character. Growth mindset is based on belief that your basic qualities are things you cultivate through your efforts.
Quote:Carol dweck says:"I need to try harder in class....take more risks."(10)
commentary:As im readingg this book i start to realize what type of person i am.Do i have a fixed or growth mindset? I can relate to this book in varities of way . I understand why me and my mom don't get along sometimes .She has more of a fixed mindset while i have a growth minds. AS time passes by and the more chapters I read i read facts that can help me have a better mindset, things that can be taken place.
conclusion:After reading this chapter i learned the two different mindsets n how they differ from one another

    TS:
A relationship is something that it needs to be worked on. It will not magically be perfect.

    Details:
Max and Charlene thought that if they had to work on their relationship then it was not meant to be together. Their friends saw how much they cared about each other and advise them to work on their problems, but Max and Charlene had a fixed mindset, and eventually they broke up. In a growth mindset you believe that things would not happen magically. It is something that needs to be worked on. When having a fixed mindset you believe that a relationship will just be perfect. No need to work on anything because things will just happen magically.

    Quote:
In Mindset, Carol S. Dweck says, “Every marriage demands an effort to keep it on the right track; there is a constant tension… between the forces that hold you together and those that can tear you apart” page 150.

    Analysis:
The reason why I choose that quote was because in a relationship it takes two. When there is conflict between them they both have to work on it in order for them to come out from it good. If one is always putting the effort it will not last long. It takes two for the relationship to success. They both will work on their flaws and make it work. Their relationship can grow much stronger and go much further than a relationship that both have a fixed mindset.

T.s: Relationships are hard to deal with
Details: Carol dweeck discusses the different ways people manage to handle relationships. Some have a fixed mindset meaning if you need to work in a relatioship then it wasn't meant to be on the other hand having a growth mindset you work hard to make the realtionship work.Men with fixed mindset think that a womens job is to work in the kicthen while men go to work.
Quote:In mindset, Carol dweck says"If you have to work at it then it wasn't meant to be(148)
Commentary:From my persepectibe I think a relationships take tons of work, time, being committed to the fullest. Although you are with one another it doesn't stop you from growing as an individual. You can learn from each others mistake and maybe fic them along the way. I think that if there is no trustand no understanding it will be hard for a relationship to maintain together. The majority of the times couples break up is because girls are insecure and thats something that us as females need to work on,
In conclusion relationships are hardd to maintain but there are not impossible

T.s: Was Michael Jordan a natural super star or did he work himself up?

Details:Michael Jordan was the hardest workingg athlete of all time . Although, he wasn;t recruited for the college he wanted to play for , he never stopped trying. If he would of had a fixed mindset he would of not tried to play anymore and would have chose a different career. His mother told him to go back n discipline himself and gladly he listen. He went back to the team he was playing for and practiced every morning until he got better.

Quote:In mindset Dwecks says"The mental toughnessand the heart are a lot atronger than some of the physical advantages you might have.I've always said that and always believe that(86)

Commentary:Just like Michael Jordan never gave up i think no one should give up . No matter what the circumstances are .Life is about struggles and sometimes they are tough challeneges but we need to overcome them. Everybody in this world has problems some more than otheres, but there's different way of h andling situtation. Having a growth mindset makes your mind expand is having both physical and mental toughness. One may seem the phyiscal perfection but it takes the mentality to make the actions that will lead u to it.Good things take time to achieve.
In conclusion:After being devasted and cut off . He managed to be a good player of all time.

T.s:The low effort syndrome are known to be for students with a fixed mindset

Details: Dwecks says students with a fixed mindset refer themselves as being loser's forever. They think of the easiest way to get good grades but yet still manage to do less work. For a student with a growth mindet it doesnt make sense for them to stop trying. for them they think adolescence is a time of opportunity to succeed.A time to learn things and hopefully gain experience.

Quote:In mindset carol dweack says:In school my main goal is to do things as easily as possible so i dont have to work hard(58)."

commmentary: Me as a student i think being a teenager and being in school is a huge opportunity in life for me to succeed. My parents would of loved to have the chance that i have right now. Even though my mom is a nurse and my brother graduated from berkely i want to be better than them. I want to become a bigger challenge to my little brother. As we get older, Life becomes tougher money gets harder to work for. Attending school for at least 20 years in total will determine the rest of my life could be 50 could be less. My point is going to school is worth it ..it is worth the time and effort you put into it so i dont understand why a student with a fix mindset will give up so easily.
In conclusion:The better student you are the better person you become.

    Mindset

Topic Sentence: In a fixed mindset relationship their thoughts are its either meant to be or not meant to be.

Details: In a fixed mindset they believe that a it doesnt take work and everything should come naturally. They are firm believers that if you have to work at it, it wasnt meant to be. They also think that their partners should know what the other is thinking, feels, or needs. When something goes wrong in the relationship they like to blame it not on themselves but on their partner.

quote: In Mindset, Carol Dweck says " When people blame their partners personality for the problem, they feel anger and disgust towards them."(PG 153)

Commentary: Starting to see flaws in your partner you become unhappy with the relationship. You start to think that because of these flaws your relationship is doomed and cant be fixed. You blind yourself from everything so that you dont have to go down a path that you dont want to go down. People with the fixed mindset are pretty much going to end up unhappy the rest if their lives because they are going to find something wrong with every single person. In the end its going to be their loss because they could be turning away potential life partners and there is nothing greater of a loss then true love.

    Mindset Chapter 6

Growth Mindset believes that a relationship will only last from working together and growing together to help fix problems in the relationship.

A growth mindet believes that a relationship or marriage will only last if you are willing to work out problems in the relationship. There is always going to be issues in the relationship. The couple will not always agree on certain issues such as who has to cook or clean. It is different from a fixed mindset because a fixed mindset believes that you must accept that your issues and not grow from them.
No couple is perfect and there will always be issues or differences.

    In mindset Carol S.Dweck says
"they Believe that a good, lasting relationship comes from effort and from working through inevitable differences."

This is true because if you are not willing to give time and effort on the relationship it will not last.In a relationship there will always be problems and arguments.A growth mindset is a way to help the relationship last because you are willing to work through each others differences. When you are in a relationship or become married you must give effort to the relationship if you want it to last. Most relationships end because there is no effort.Instead of fighting it is better to resolve the problem that is what will keep a relationship strong.

    LA LLorona

LA LLorona I grew up with la Llorona, when I was small and lived in Mexico Nayarit to be exact, that is where my family comes from. I remember my grandparents telling the story of la LLorona la LLorona it’s a well know story in Mexico. I remember my paternal grandparents telling me the story, the story that I know is that there was a beautiful lady in a small village that married a hansom rich ranchero man. They had two kids there kids become her husband priority. She was ignored by her husband who she was deeply in love. Her Husband left that town and when to that city where he meet a rich woman that belong to his class. He left Maria, for another woman Maria devastated and angry took it out on there children. Out of rage she took her two children to the river and she threw then in to the river, but as they where disappearing down the stream, she realize what she has done. She ran down the bank of the river reaching out her arms to them, but they where long gone. Maria had fallen down the river as well and she was dead on the bank of the river. The people in the village new what she has done, and one night they heard the sound of crying down by the river. It was la LLorona crying where are my children!!!”Hay mis hijos”. They will also see a lady in a white dress crying for her children. From there the Mexican Legend La LLorona comes, some people say it was a truth story and also my grandparents said it was a true story.

    Mindset Chapter 5

Topic Sentence: In a business the fixed mindset can ruin your whole plans of reaching for success.

Details: Albert Dunlap helped companies by getting them ready to sell for a profit. He got a lot of profit from the turn around and sale of Scott Paper. He felt that he earned every penny, but he also felt like a super star. His thought was if you are in a business its just to make money. They would usually give to charity and a woman asked if they were going to start that again since they were doing good. So he told her you can give to charity out of your own pocket, but from the company were here to just make money. He felt as if he needed to prove and reprove to people by him looking like a genius. Albert closed or sold 2/3 of Sunbeams plants and fired 12000 employees. The company rose so high it ruined his plans of selling the company. He fired people who questioned what he did. Dunlap fell apart and was kicked out of the company.

Quote: In Mindset, Carol S. Dweck says, "Al Dunlap thought that he was inherently superior, so he opted out of the kind of learning that would have helped him succeed". (119)

Analysis: Albert should have listened to the employees instead of just firing them. He thought only his opinions were right and only his opinion mattered. But in reality when you put multiple ideas together you get one great one. Albert had a fixed mindset and thats what pushed him to failure. Yes he was on top at one point but you fall faster than how you get up there. He had money from the companies he helped, but instead of just preparing them for one sale he should have also helped them for the companies future. He basically kicked himself out of the business for being so ignorant, and not listening to the people that could have helped him. Having that fixed mindset can play tricks on a person. It can make you think you are going to be fine and do well but in the end it backfires and you end up with nothing.

    Mindset Chapter 6

Topic sentence: Being in a relationship and having a fixed mindset will make that relationship have a short story with a bad ending.

Details: Charlene and her friends went to see the orchestras performance and went back stage afterwards. Charlene met Max. Before they left Max grabbed Charlenes hand and told her next time lets make it longer. They seemed to enjoy each others company. They liked the same food, analyzing people, and travel. After time passed by Max started getting really moody. Thats how he was really but he just did not show it in the beginning. The friends saw what was happening and encouraged them to fix the problem, but they felt that if they were meant to be they would not have to work on anything it will just come naturally. So they eventually broke up.

Quote: In Mindset, Carol S. Dweck says, "Remember in the fixed-mindset idea if you have ability, you shouldn't have to work hard? This is the same belief applied to relationships: if you are compatible, everything should just come naturally". (149)

Analysis: In the fixed mindset the person thinks they do not have to work hard. Even in relationships they think everything should just come when the time is right. And if they do not last then it was not meant to be. In reality you are just hurting yourself. Yes you can blame the other person for you having a broken heart but in reality it was you because you decided not to work on each others differences. In a fixed minded relationship everything is good at first, and as time passes by everything begins to crumble because they are not working on the things they should be working on. The people decide not to work on things because everyone is capable of talking thats why everyone has a mouth. So in the fixed mindset relationship is basically a disaster waiting to happen.

    Mindset chapter 1

Topic sentence: Having a fixed or growth mindset can change the way you look at different situations.

Details: You are having a bad day. Your professor gave you back your midterm and you see that you got a C+ and you are very disappointed in yourself. When you get to your car you see that you got a parking ticket. When you get home you call your best friend and feel like she is just blowing you off. People with a fixed mindset would think that they are not smart. They would feel like their best friend does not want to be their friend anymore, and say that their life is not as good as they thought. In the growth mindset they would think that they should study harder. Next time they will study a weeks ahead instead of on day before the midterm. The best friend situation in the growth mindset they would talk to their best friend and see if anything is bothering them.

Quote: In mindset, Carol S. Dweck says, "You dont have to have one mindset or the other to be upset. Who wouldnt be?".(9)

Analysis: In the fixed mindset they think that they have no chance in the world anymore. They face the situation with negative thoughts, and they dont learn from that experience because those negative thoughts keep haunting them. In the growth mindset they actually learn and see the mistakes they made. Unlike the people with the fixed mindset they think they are always right and they cant have any problems, but in reality we all need help no one is perfect. In the growth mindset they live off of positive thoughts not negative ones. So the way they grow is by having positive thoughts and seeing that the situation will get better if they just fix the things they did wrong the first time and not make those mistakes again.

    Mindset chapter 2

Topic sentence: Do we succeed by proving were smart or do we succeed by failing and learning about our mistakes.

Details: They offered children different types of jigsaw puzzles. Kids with a fixed mindset stuck with the easy ones or the ones that will make them look smart. Because they think smart kids do not make mistakes or in other words smart kids can not fail. The kids with a growth mindset went on to the harder ones and were asked if they wanted to keep doing the same puzzle and they responded by saying why would i want to do the same puzzle over and over again. Every time they would get one right they would move on to another one which was harder. The children with the growth mindset think that intelligence is something you have to work for it is not just given to you.

Quote: In Mindset, Carol S. Dweck says, "so children with the fixed mindset want to make sure they succeed. Smart people should always succeed. But for the children with the growth mindset, success is about stretching themselves". (17)

Analysis: Children with a fixed mindset think they can not make mistakes. And if they do make a mistake that people will look at them life if they are dumb. So their whole life they live to prove themselves. They live their whole life thinking they have to be perfect. The children in the growth mindset believe that they have to stretch themselves. They think in order to get smarter you have to try different things and if you do not figure something out the first time try again until you get what you are looking for. To them failure is like giving them another chance to try something and succeed at it. In the fixed mindset you have to be perfect, but in reality no one is perfect. In the growth mindset you have to fail in order to succeed.

    Guest speakers of the past

On Monday December 5 2011, English 20 had a pot luck and also we had Mr.Hsaio students from the past who told us about their cave. Mr Hsaio former students were siblings of the students of today like Robert and David moriez. Each one had a story to tell. Prisslaa daza, Robert sister, had trouble with the family because one of her major is theater. Oloa david’s brother, had recently came from Egypt and told us his story about crashing his dad’s car, samatha who had a illeness when she was a baby but later been given a second chance, valeria who came here to the U.S and told us that she had a deaf brother and that was one of the reason why she and her family came to the U.S and also major in Sign Language. I can relate to Valeria’s story about her mom getting her residence. Recently my stepdad came back from El Salvador almost two years. Because my mom and step dad submitted a paper for his green card but in order for him to receive his green card, he need to back to el Salvador and have a trial over there. He left around March with my mom and my sister. He had to take trail and the court respond that he had to stay in Salvador from 6 month to 10 years possibly. It was pretty hard for those 2 years. Especially for my mom and little sister who didn’t know what was going on at that time. But thank god that they let him come back to the U.S after spending some time over at Salvador. So I guess in a way it relates to Valeria’s story

P.S Thank you Valeria for showing me up in the sign language and also thank you Daniel Fragoso for giving me the shout out on your presentation

    Guest Speakers
On Monday, Mr. Hsiao’s students came in, and told to the class about their caves. The first speaker was Priscilla Daza. She is very a positive person. She did not know what to do for her major, and she did not have any plan for her life. However, she finally found what she wanted to do for her major because she never gave up. The second speaker was Bola Mories. He is a strong person and very motivated person too. He did what he wanted to do. Although he had a hard time to understand systems of his work, he tried and practiced a lot until he was good at it. Jessica Vasquez was third guest speaker. She got bulled when she was young. She hated school and did not care about high school. Later, she decided to go to college. This affected on her job to change. However, her family did not care about her educations. The point was that she decided to go to college was she wanted to show to her family that drop school and get pregnant in early age are not right. Valeria Angeles, fourth speaker, came to U.S. from Mexico when she was young because of her brother’s sickness. Her family also had a difficult time to live and struggled with English. However, her family never gave up. She learned that even though she thought there was no hope at that time, the hope would come when the times come. Samantha Luque, fifth speaker, had a paralyze disease. She had luck to have a second chance of life, which means she could move her body. However, she had male influence because of her stepfather. She had negative thinking about male. In senior year, she felt in love and her boyfriend changed her bias. Sixth speaker was Daniel Faggoso. He was very good child when he was young. He listened what his parent said. Started in high school, he went to a bad way when he was hanging out with a group of friends. His brother stopped him, and he started to have motivation when he started to go to college. Keely Jackson, seventh guest speaker, got bull by her appearance. Although she is Hispanic, she does not look like one. Her skin color, eyes color, and language are different. Therefore, she did not have any friends except kindergarteners. She had contact with suicide by bad people. Khaye Buenaventura, eighth speaker, did not want Mr. Hsiao’s class because she wanted to get an A. Next semester, she took other professor’s class for English 52. She realized Mr. H was a good professor and she learned many things from him. Ninth speaker was Jessica Cleary. She had boyfriend when her age was twelve and her boyfriend aged eighteen. Other people judged her relationship that she could not understand the meaning of love because she was too young. However, she married with him and had a kid now. Last speaker was Audrey Valdvin. Her five closed friend died. Her parent got divorced. Because of her environment, it made her to become a rude and a selfish person. However, she is very honest and very confident. After I heard their stories, I felt that they have something in common in their life. Although they had difficult life, they never gave up. They tried something until they got what they wanted. All guest speakers are very strong people. I am thanking them to come and shared their caves. Most of storied were very touched but gave me some motivations at the same time.

I must say on Monday class was very interesting. Mr. Hsiao’s students came in and talked about their cave. Each one of them had a touching speech. I appreciate them taking time out off their schedules to come give us a wonderful speech. There was certain speakers that I could relate to. Like Bola Moriesm, Jessica Vasquez, Samantha Luque, Daniel Faggoso and lastly Audrey Valdvin. I believe Bola is a wonderful and strong man because he decided to start a whole different life in America. He thought it was hard but yet he never gave up. He started from the bottom and now he has a business, which is great. Jessica Vasquez seemed to be such a humble girl. She was not doing great in high school but she decided to go to college and now she is doing great. She did not have her mother’s support but that did not stop her. She loves to help people, which is what makes her such a wonderful girl. Samantha Lugue, was given a second chance in life. As a baby she had a disease that had her paralyzed. They believed she was going to die but she overcame the disease thanks to her mother, aunt and God. She did not have a father figure. Samantha searched for that male roll model. Her grandpa was took that special roll because her biological father denied her. She is now a successful woman who is taking advantage of what God gave her. Daniel Faggoso, was a great kid growing up. When he started high school, he had bad influences that lead him to making bad choices. Through out the time he overcame it and decided to change his life because he knew the life he was living was not taking him to a good future. I don’t know what he was doing but I could relate to him because my three brothers are in prison because of their bad choices in the streets. I believe Daniel is a good example for those in the street that think they cant change their lives. I really appreciate them giving their speech because it really made me understand so many things. They are strong people with such big hearts. They gave me motivation to continue with my education and never to give up. Thank You (:

    Talent Code Chapter 8

    Topic Sentence
Ron Gallimore and Roland Tharp developed a successful reading program called KEEP though observing the UCLA basketball coach John Wooden.
    Detail
In 1972 Ron and Tharp opened their doors with applying the most cutting-edge pedagogical theories of the day, many of which had to do with teacher strategies to increase percentages of “on task” time. There first two year were not very successful because reading achievement stayed low. By the summer of 1974 Tharp and Ron began to question their methodology. They same summer both men were at UCLA teaching and where they had a great idea to help their KEEP program. They would study the greatest teacher and use the result to help them at KEEP. Both men instantly thought of the same person Mr. John Wooden the head basketball coach at UCLA. He had led the UCLA team to nine championships in the last ten years. Tharp and Ron would sit in on their practices and observe how it was they Wooden was so successful. When practice started they expected chalk talks, inspiring speeches, punishment laps for slackers, and praise for hard work. But to there surprise there were none. Instead Wooden rarely spoke only to give instructions on how to perform. Although both Tharp and Ron where confused, they later realized though their data they collected that 2,326 discrete acts of teaching. Of the a mere 6.9% were compliments. Only 6.8% were expressions of displeasure. But 75% were pure information, what to do, how to do it, when to intensify an activity. Wooden frequent way of teaching was modeling the correct way to do something, then the incorrect way, and then the right way. Wooden skill resided in the Gatling-gun rattle of targeted information he fired at his players.
    Quote
Daniel Coyle in Talent Code says, “His words and gestures served as short, sharp impulses that showed his players the correct way to do something (page. 170)
    Analysis
As Tharp and Ron watch Wooden coach they discover that talent is taught not by praise, denunciation, or pep talk. It was his breaking down of a skill and visually showing the right way to do things. He wasted no time from practice with pep talks or yelling at players. Instead he used up all the time seeing and correcting errors and showing players the correct way to do things. With this ne knowledge Tharp and Ron returned to KEEP applying what they learn. They focused planning information-oriented teaching.. They demonstrated and explained, spoke in short imperative burst. With this put into play their KEEP program began to improve and exceed national averages score in stander reading.

    Class Speakers
The class speakers Mr. Hsiao brought all talked about their cave and how the overcame it and the way that its made them stronger today. Priscilla DazaHer cave was that her parents didn’t support her passion for theater so it was hard for her to choose a major. But being in Mr. Hsiao classes helped her to pursue declaring that as her major and also discovering that she too wants to major in English. I thought that was really amazing that she believed in herself to pursue a dual major and now is writing comedy sketches for Cerritos. Bolla Mories Bolla’s cave was moving to a new country and adjusting to the culture. I felt inspired that even through having to learn a new language and fighting for work with out a clue on how the US worked he now own his own shoes store on Ebay and is in Cerritos collage looking to better his life. I found it funning how he admitted to always fighting with his bother in class and sweet that he still loves him even though they fight about almost everything. Jessica Vasquez Jessica’s cave was getting through school with out the support of her family and being bullied all through her school years. I found her story very inspirational because of everything she went threw like getting bulled and not getting along with her mom, working at a young age, and still she finds it in her self to come back to school and educate her self for a better future.Valoria Angeles I liked how she supports her brother and always seeks to help others. Her cave was coming to the United States at a young age and having to learn the language for fear of not understanding her classmates. I think she come a long way since that knowing sign language which most American’s do not know, Also having her own non-profit .Samantha Lugue Very amazing person just by seeing all that she does for the PSA group and balancing her school. Her cave was not having a father figure when she was young. She wanted to meet her dad but when she met him he was not the person she wanted him to be. I think she is very inspirational by all that she accomplished having her AA already and working toward a second.Daniel Fragosa His cave was over coming his bad habits he learned in high school. He turn his life around for his little brother and family. All I want to say is right on Daniel!!!!!! KEEP DOING WHAT YOUR DOING BRO. I don t know you well but for someone to get off the street and come to college wile being involved in almost everything it seems in excuse my language but fucken awesome.Keely Jackson Keely’s cave was being bulled all threw school because she looked white and didn’t speak Spanish. I believe its astonishing when someone like Keely learns from her bad experiences instead of letting it consume her. She hung out with smaller kids in school and she learn that she loved working with little kids and now hopes to teach little children. Right on KeelyKhaye BuenaventuraHer cave was getting kicked out of her house for no reason. Well she’s in school with out the support of her family which shows that she’s a person that believe in her self to make her own future. She also was scared of Mr. Hsiao and the “Hsiao Experience” hahahah!!! But she later learn that he is the coolest and most awsomest professor ever!!!

Post 10 continuing Jessica Cleery Well she kinda scared me to be honest with you. “ If your not with me your against me” Yea she was right about being aggressive. Any ways she was my favorite guess speaker. I think out of the entire guest speaker she went threw the toughest obstacle. She was a military child, in an abusive relationship at the age of 12, rapped, and dropped out of school at the age of 16. She is now a mother of a child and working full time wile balancing school full time as well. Man I gotta say she’s kinda like supper women. Her goals are for a better future and she doesn’t plan on letting anyone get in the way. She seems like a nice and happy person and she has a lot going for her. She is truly an inspiration to my and I am sure to others that know her.Audrey ValdiviaWell her cave didn t seem to bother her much. But it was growing up with her family always fighting and eventually her father leaving her and denying her. Seem was very funning with her speech. Well speaker and great personality.

You said you want to stay in school which is great and I know you will not give up. Good luck on your business and school thank you!

Jessica Vasquee - You were raised by a single mom which is always hard and you were bullied in middle school which is even harder. I was happy to hear that when you dropped out you decided to come back to school! You will do great in school just keep on trying thank you for taking your time to come speak to us.

Valeria Angeles- It is always hard when people come from Mexico to America because they often leave family memembers behind which is the hardest thing to do. I am happy that your mom is finally able to go and come back from Mexico.Thank you for coming to our class.

Audrey Valdivia- Your story really amazed me. You could have been the one killed but you are still here. Take advantage of the time you still have. Your story really showed me how i should appreciate life more because at any second it can go away. Thank you for speaking to our class.

    Good bye Class
I don’t know how the time went by. I feel like the first day of semester was just like yesterday, but it is almost over. I wished that I want to finish this semester fast because I just wanted to get over every projects and homework from his class. However, when I noticed that his class is almost over, I have mixed feeling about it. I feel better that I have no more projects and homework, but I have feeling that I am going to miss his class at the same time. From his class, I realized myself again that I need to more work on English. I went to writing center for revising my essay. When a tutoring teacher marked on my essay that I needed to revise, I felt shame on me that I was so conceited to myself. His class will be my good memory. I will be missing you all
