Long Beach City College 801A/801B

Blogging in the Blogosphere
English 52, 60, 100

FORMAT:
When you blog, in the Title, write your first and last name as you would as if you are turning in a paper to me. Then you do not have to write my name because I know you are in my class. Write what English class you are in whether it is English 801 A, B, 105, 1.

For example, one would write:

Yue Hayes
English 801 A
Post #1

Homelessness
Font size
In addition, for the title, pick the topic of discussion, grammar/organization, content, current events, pop culture or literature as a TITLE that we have discussed in class. Write the posts like this: write #1 Post or #2 Post or Post #50, so I can easily keep track of them and how many you write.

Of course, you are welcome to write more than several posts, and in doing so is another form of participation and does count in the participation grade. Perhaps, in class, you may not participate all that much but in the realm of the blogosphere, you can from the comfort of your own home,

* reflect on the day's class discussion or offer up an insight that you found particularly interesting, etc., etc.
*

* How does it change the way you think or thought before on the subject?
*

* What actions might you take in the future? Anything is open to interpretation.

Of course, I need not go on and on about being respectful towards your peers' opinions and beliefs. If you disagree with another student's views be discreet about it: Do not say so and so is completely wrong because of this and that. Instead, say, I disagree with so and so and here are the reasons why I do. Go after their evidence and support and do not, I repeat do not attack someone else personally. This is supposed to be a forum for everyone to share their ideas and views.

*I will enforce the blogosphere by either deleting your hard work, making an example out of you here in the realm of the blogosphere or in class* . . .

    Greeting classmates

Hey, my name is Daisy Acevedo. This is my very first year ever attending college. I always knew life was a challenge and by attending community college i proved it even way more. The first day of college was BIG challenge, driving in such crowded streets, so many rude people (mostly girls, I guess they woke up on the wrong side of the bed) and finding the class (very nice and helpful people that I crossed with) and knowing I was on the waiting list for most of my classes was not so helpful but I did not let that bring me down. Even though I was told "No, sorry my class is full" more than once I did not let that bring me down once again. I just kept thinking in my head "I'M NOT A QUITER I'M A FIGHTER" and i kept being persistent. Showing up to class, taking notes, and hoping the professor would let me add their class. Well guess what I proved something that if you really want something and you do everything that is in your reach to obtain it you succeed. Thank you Mr. Hsiao for giving me the opportunity to take your class. I'm also very excited to work and get to know every one in this class.

    Hey Peers,

Well first let me introduce myself, I am Theresa Fanene. This is my first semester of college, been out of school for six years. I am a mother to a wonderful, curious and sometimes "Ms. Know It All" four year old princess. She is my motivation to be better and strive so hard for my goals in life. I live with my daughter, husband, parents and two siblings. Crazy? I know. But we all make it work. These are the people I know that will always keep it real with me and will always let me know when I need to get my act together. I am all about my family and God. First Day of college I was so scared. I usually don't talk to people let alone introduce myself, but this time it was different. I started talking to fellow classmates and made a few friendships here and there. Which is awesome, if you ask me. Since we are on our first impression about our teacher paper; When I walked in class August 15th, 2011 I thought to myself when I seen Mr. H, great he is going to be one strict teacher. Like the quote, 'Never judge a book by its cover", is very true. Mr. H is a great professor thus far and I love telling my husband about what we did in class. Thanks Mr. H for keeping it real and the meditation time with readings. But I really hope to get to know everyone in this class and make friends.

I feel being the same is boring. I live for the mopment because tomorrow isn't promised. Honestly im just happy i've even made it this far. Im a rapper and consider music to be... pretty much my life. I dont care what others think about me because i've always felt if you think about it, technically the world does revolve around me. Haha Isn't that something. Well, anywho I like girls.. Alott!! Glad its not all guys on earth. That would suck. In class i suppose i seem pretty chill but on the outside im kind of different. I dont trust anybody and hate having to depend on people. I watch who i let in my life and for this i blame my past life occasions. I would say more but its starting to seem like im just rambling now, so bye.

    Hey every one,

Well hello, my name is Alejandra Medina. I am 18 about to turn 19. Some people say that I look young for my age, so I take it as a compliment. I use to be the baby girl of my house until my little brother was born 7 years ago. He kind of took my throne. However, I still kind of get what I want sometimes. I also have an older sister, so that makes me the middle child. I like to play sports especially soccer. I been playing soccer since I was seven so I have twelve years of deep practice. But I love to do so much more like cooking, baking, sewing, drawing, singing in the shower, and taking pictures. I am always multi-tasking on things but i get my stuff done. I'm the knid of girl that is always smiling even if it is for somthing dumb. I also dont really care what people say about me, I like who I am as a person and what others think doesn't change the way I think.

First off let me introduce myself! My name is Unique. I'm a very outgoing, friendly, and UNIQUE person in every way. I believe I have a great personality and I know I'm a good friend! Or so I've been told! This is my first year at LBCC. I'm going to major in becoming a mortician(crazy right?) I feel like I'm going to get a lot out of this class. When I first saw Mr. Hsiao he looked like a serious teacher who plays no games.(strict) Turns out he's pretty cool and layed back! He's definitely the type to make u earn what u learn. =) Then again it is just the beginning of the semester. You never know...he might just turn out to be a teacher worth remembering and who I wont ever forget! If you're reading this post Mr. Hsiao I hope this doesn't effect my grade! Laughing out loud. Just kidding.

I Love playing soccer and futsal, if I could I would go to Mexcio and Study to become a soccer coach but that's just a dream right now. I been through a lot in life and one thing it has taught me is to always for give but never forget. Hi Everyone,

My name is Charlene some people call me Charlie, but mostly just family. This is my 2 year here at LBCC and my major is Administrate Assistant. I am a full time student (12 units), I work part-time at the LAC campus as a student worker and of course I am a mother of a 3 year old little Princess and Irma I can so relate to how you feel. Sometimes I think God can I continue to do this anymore? Unlike Alejandra I waited A LONG time to come back to school and I so admire the young students who come to college straight out of high school maybe even a little jealous! I am 41 and trying to get a degree because at 18 & 19 I had better things to do or so I thought. I am just very grateful that I am doing it now because you’re never too old to learn and I have meet some REALLY great people on my education journey. And Theresa if you are ready this Thank you for all your help. I really appreciate you and hope you and your daughter had a good time at Chuck-E-Cheese. Now for my quote oh and Alejandra I really liked your quote.

But she did have fun Charlene. Thanks for trusting me to do this for you. I'll see you Wednesday. Hope you're having a great weekend.

    Have a wonderful weekend everyone.

  11. Hi everyone! My name is Charlene but some people call me Charlie, family mostly. This is my 2 year attending Long Beach City College and I am going for my AA in Administrative Assistant and then transfer to a four year university mostly like Cal State Long Beach. I am a full time student, part-time student worker and I have a beautiful 3 year old little girl name Lauren. So I can totally relate to what Irma was saying about her life being crazy. Some days I feel so overwhelmed and doubt myself. I mean remember that one day during Mr. H mediation he read the email from a student about her considering quitting school and just focus on getting a job? I swear that was me all the way! I feel bad about not spending that much time with my daughter and she stays at day care almost 10 hours a day. I drop her off at 8:00a.m. and don’t see her until 6:00p.m. or 8:00p.m. On the two nights that I have night class and then its rush home take a bath, eat dinner then off to bed, only to wake up and do it all over again the next day. I cried that day Mr. H read his response email to that student! I know in my heart of hearts that this too shall pass and life will be easier one day, but I am not coming to college straight out of high school and for those of you who are my hat goes off to you. Do it while you’re young so by the time you’re my age (40) you’ll have all this out of the way. Okay, I know I am going on and on now so I’ll close. Oh but before I do I wanted to comment on Josh trust issues. I REALLY hope that one day you can learn to trust again because there will come a point in your life when you’ll fall in love with that special someone and it won’t be fair to her. To truly love there has to be trust. Alright, I am gone now. Everyone have a wonderful 3 day weekend and I will see you all on Wednesday.

Our class trip to the Grammy Museum was absolutely wonderful! It turned out way better than I expected. At first people remained in there little groups with there friends; but after awhile I believe the bowling game brought us closer together after we cut loose! Being able to experience something that holds so many historical events was amazing! I had a blast and cant wait to see what else is in store for the rest of our class semester. I say we should go to the Museum of Tolerance in Los Angeles! just had to add that little part in. Thanks everyone! hope all had a great weekend!

My reflection of the Grammy museum is that it was nice and interesting. I enjoyed seeing Michael Jackson's items. I also like seeing the red carpet outfits. The Latin Grammys Celia Cruz pink and gold gown as well, it was amazing. I enjoyed lunch and bowling afterwards. I had a great time and a new experience.

Hello my name is Ella-Monae(El-La... Mo-Nae) easy, right? Most people call me Ella or Monae either one is fine. People would say all but mostly that I'm a fun person to chill with and i would have to agree am a little Niruby, which is my mom.But i got my own touch of myself of course.I stay in Ontario and travel back and forward to school, I'm used to it because me and my mom is always on the road. I plan on moving out to Long Beach or Lakewood when i get a job and car.I sing at times but way to shy to be on the spot, I don't know how i performed for my high school and for the Pomona Christmas event. But I consider my self more a dancer and still learning. It is one of my blessed gift and passion i have gotten from my mother. Once i finish college i plan on joining a agency and go on from there beginning as a background dancer and one day become a choreographer.I love to try new things and travel. I would say I am a dare devil to an extent. I always busy either spending time handling my business at school or with family and friends.I thank God for everything he has done for me. Blessed to have a loving mother.. and protective dad and family. I have more guys as friends then females, i prefer guys because you cant trust females these days. well anyone in that fact. I put family and school first and everything rest next. All i want to do is my it in life but live and exist at the same time!

On the first day of school, I was not looking forward to it because I was nervous and I didn't know what to expect of college environment. But after I went to my classes I though it was pretty chill and the environment is basically the same as high school just in the class we have all different ages in the class. Also that college classes give way more homework then high school.

    Hello classmates!

My name Jocelyn Lara and I am excited to be back in school. This is my third semester at Long Beach City College; since, I graduated high school in 2008. So far, this school has taught me independence, responsibility, and to never take school for granted. I am striding to become a registered nurse. I love to help people and make them happy. I recently moved out my parents and I am living with my significant loved one. I am always learning things about one another. I am deeply in love with cooking and finding new recipes to make all kinds of chicken. It’s by far my favorite, so you can't have the same flavored chicken just once. Well I guess this officially my first blog ever and its been fun.

Well, it was also my first time at Staples Center When we went inside, I had fun messing around recording and making beats. It was funny how people were getting caught taking pictures and in front of Mr. Hsiao, too. I like how they all the touch screen technology there. It was a good experience. I also had my first bowling game, man do I suck. I had fun though but still embarrassing at how much i sucked. I am looking forward to the next trip.

I think eating food is great. I love to eat food. I just made this cheesy lasagna which looks bomb. And for sleeping it's the best thing anyone can do. About your schedule, you will get use to it by your second semester.

    Hey Everyone,

So let me just tell you guys that I wanted to attend the Grammy Museum with you guys. However, my father had other plans for me. We ended up going camping at Las Cañadas in Baja California. At first i was mad, upset, with a very long face but it came to be a pretty OK trip. I went through a lot of things on the way back too. I came back with my uncle because my dad had to stay to put a watering system for one of our friends. I ended up getting car sick by the way my uncle drives good thing I did not throw up. In addition, the car had ran out of gas in the middle of nowhere so my uncle left and went in search for a gas station miles away. So over all I kind of had fun I can't complain.

Hope everyone had a very nice weekend. =]

Hello English class! My names Christy, and this is my second year here at LBCC. I want become a physician assistant BUT I'm a little afraid of blood so I'm really indecisive as of right now. I was born in Long Beach, CA. I am the youngest and only girl with three hectic older brothers. I am really family oriented that's something from the top of my standards. I'm really hard working. I love shopping! Probably one of my second thing to do for relaxation. I'm a great listener and a good advice giver only in some sort of situations. Some people have told me I'm shy or quiet but I'm actually outgoing. One thing I also like to do is draw. I want to go back into painting and building art. Well,i'll stop here and I hope I get to know everyone in this class as I did with my last English class with prof Hsiao.

    Good Morning fellow classmates,

My name is Carmen Moreno but you could call me Beatriz, which is my middle name. I am a returning student from 2003. I was attending LBCC for only two months because I though I had it all under control and boy was I so wrong about that. I began to work in the filming Industry as a production coordinator. I later began to ask myself “The” question why do I even need college if I have a great paying job? So I decided to work for the past eight years and ignore college. Suddenly I decided to come back to college this pass summer and take English 801A. I remember how nervous and anxious I was the first day of class. As I entered the classroom I was relief to see Mr. Hsiao, and was lucky enough to find a seat. The first five minutes of reading the syllabus I knew this class was not going to be easy but challenging. I enjoyed all the books I read and mostly Mr. Hsiao’s teaching. I meet a lot of outgoing and friendly classmates that later became my very good friends. I was fortune to pass the class and this semester I’m blessed to be part of his English801B. I am looking forward to getting to know everyone in my class and becoming good friends. I am currently out for the moment but I hope to see everyone next week. This will be a very tough and even more challenging semester for me, because I have so many obstacles I have to over come while being in class. I will not give up no matter how hard my obstacles hit me I will break through them like a rhino. I hope everyone had a beautiful blessed Labor Day weekend. See you next week Classmates.

My reflection is about "THE TALENT CODE".

The section of Chapter 3 that I can relate to was about genes. It talks about your environment and nature combination is what makes you who you are. The genes is the blueprint of your nucleotides which, is the most important foundation of your structure and nature which, derives from your environment that means, how you where raised. Your thinking pattern which related to how your parents/mentors planted their subliminal messages to the (little child), for instance, "you are too smart for your own good". I like this particular section of chapter 3 because, it informs one how myelin begins, it explains deep-practice in away that everyone can understands which states, "This system is flexible, responsive, and economical, because it gives all human beings the innate potential to earn skill where they need it", page 72.

    Hi Everyone,

I don’t know about the rest of you guys but I struggle reading the Talent Code. I really like the idea of our myelin growing and making us smarter (except for the fact that I only have around 10 more years of myelin growth) but I have to pick up the dictionary almost on every page because there is a word that is unfamiliar.

I like both books but Mindset is a little easier to read. What really caught my attention was the part about “The Danger of Praise” I have a 3 year old little girl (she’ll be 3 in November) and of course as all proud mother’s do I praise her all the time. But reading this has opened my eyes to a lot of different things especially since I had a set mindset before reading this. I think I have a little of both. Oh, and the part about studying just to ace a test. That is so me! I was just telling me friend I can hardly remember things I learned in classes last semester because I was just studying to get a good grade not to actually learn something new. I am going to try a different approach this semester.

Well I hope everyone has a great weekend, and I will see you on Monday.

I going to talk about the talent code because I have not yet read mine set, just by looking at it makes my mine set go down and it make me want to do something else. But its cool because they use deep practice with the Z-boys like they did with futsal. Example they used a basket ball court to play futsal with small gaps and more skills to control the ball because of the size. In chapter 3 the Z-boys use a pool to practices and built skills kinda like the basket ball court. The Z-boys had too us more leg movements and also use there arms to carry their skate board of the pool to do tricks. I busted a all nighter juat to read the books also do my other homework. Mr. Hsiao can you come to my house and meditate me because I sure need some right now!! although I did see First 48 and some Chuck Norris movies so I think I'm good. (RGT)

    Reflection on "Talent Code"

I enjoy reading this book. It gives one a better understanding on how to be better at our skills.

In chapter 3 it talks about the Bronte sisters, Z-Boys, and the Renaissance. In this chapter is shows how ones environment has an affect on what one does and becomes. Coyle breaks it down how these sisters became great writers by using work from other people that also studied these sisters. Daniel Coyle, in "The Talent Code", says, "Skill is insulation that wraps neural circuits and grows according to certain signals." page 58. The Brontes sisters were not great writers when they first started, but they got better because of deep practice on a skill which was storytelling. The same for the Z-Boys, who shocked the skateboarding world when they came in with a different style of using the skateboard. They used their skill from surfing and turned it into something better with a skateboard and lots of hours of practice. There are certain explanations given in "The Talent Code", about the Renaissance. It gives you prosperity, peace, freedom, social mobility, and the paradigm thing. All of these things where the likely causes of the Renaissance.

In this chapter is basically tells us that myelin does not care of your background, just how long you practice and what you did to become better.

    See you all tomorrow. :)

    Reflection on "Talent Code"
For the firstt time I actually liked reading chapter three in "Talent Code". It caught my attention with the examples used in this chapter. I think what the Bronte sisters did that made them such great writers is amazing. They just kept on writing eventhough their grammer was not perfect. However, that was like their deep practice right there. They kept at it and became great to what at first were only misspelled little books. I also considered the example of the baby crawling and the new born horse. It is all based on the myelin we have and when it starts to produce.

Reflection: "The Talent Code" Chapter 3

As I began to read chapter 3 already confused with myelin in my head not fully understanding it’s properties whatsoever. The introduction of the Brontes, the Z-boys, and the renaissance made it a lot more clearer. First of all never hearing of the Brontes at all, it was amazing to read the kind of creativity they had as small children and how they carried that over to later years in life was mind boggling. When you are little you always hear people telling you to grow up and to stop thinking of those monsters or those creatures that you draw or talk about. Not only did the Brontes continue their creativity, but used their wild imagination in their books. Not only was it like saying “ Heck yeah, look at what I finally did!” but more of all that time writing all these silly so called things are worth more than anyone would have thought. Now the Z-boys sounds familiar because of the movie, but really reading of how much they practiced and the obstacles they went through to just skate is very interesting. One thing I admire is that they fall, get-up, and try over and over again. The renaissance was the most interesting to me. I love art and always learning about art. I couldn’t believe that they learned through hands-on work or that must were apprentices just one shadowing another artist. It makes me keep on looking over my favorite artist to keep trying. Then at the end of the chapter summarizing how the skills we developed and practice can ultimately create your own myelin and that genes don’t determine that, but yourself. Overall, it was a good chapter to read, can’t you tell! just look at this long post.

I enjoy reading Mindset more then Talent Code. In Talent Code there are some words i just don't get. Mindset Ch 3 mentions did we know that with the right mindset and the right teaching people are capable of alot more than we think. It is intresting and truth how it works. The fixed mindset limits achivement. The mind set on these chapters were foced on college students. It explained that each student comes in with a mind set from high school and then going into college it would change threw the course of time.

Mr. Hsiao mentioned on class that a lot of people like Talent Code better because Mindset is boring. But i actually like Mindset a lot better. Reading Talent Code almost feels like im reading a science book, but in Mindset chap. 3 i can somewhat relate. Carol Dweck talk about having a positive mind to reach success, he not only change my perspective, he made me think twice about the way i see things and also a positive encouragement.

Reflection on Chapter 3 "The Talent Code"

When I hear the real stories on how people supposedly born with talent in which they had to practice very hard to achieve their skills. It motivates me that I can be better in sports, math, or anything. It just take determination and practice. Also, the story of Michael Jordan inspires me because he did not make the cut for his high school basketball team and now he is probably the best basketball player ever. In this book, I like how they give examples and stories of how people became so great at what they do because it is motivation.

I barely receives my book in the mail not too long ago. So as I'm reading chapter 3 in this book I can't believed that the sisters was so young and they already wrote books. They start writting books at a young age, but they kept on practicing, that whats makes them more better. that sad part is when they die at a young age.

The book Mind Set is a good book. I am not much a reader, but I can honestly say that I am reading both books. Both books are very inspiring, and motivational. They actually make me want to get up and run, but only for like 10 min. I think after I read it all I might actually read it a second time just so that I can get pumped up and run. I like running, but I don't do it as much as I used to over the years I've become lazier and lazier. I think its genetic I have a younger brother and he's a bear he never comes out of his room he basically started hibernating ever since he discovered the internet. I think the internet is the greatest invention so far, the internet is more convenient when anyone wants to find out something about anything. For anyone that has a Facebook and is reading this add on Facebook me my e-mail is hrndz22@yahoo.com or you can also find me on facebook.com/mixxter. I don't like talking allot in class because I am trying to change my habits. Other than that everyone should read Mind Set and Talent Code.

@skyy good luck with your future job with the right attitude and a good mindset anything is possible. If you need any motivation just keep reading Talent code.

    Hey everyone,

Just wanted to touch base with everyone and comment on chapter 4. I still like the Mindset better than the Talent Code only because Mindset is easier reading. I read both chapters this morning and I do like both books but so many words that I am unfamiliar with in the Talent Code.

I think they are both inspirational books and give a different outlook on how I perceive things. For example I just always thought I SUCKED at math. This semester I am taking a math class and trying to have a growth mindset about it and it is working for me.

On my first quiz last week I got an 88% of course 100% would of been a better grade, but I know that as long as I keep practicing and studying I’ll do even better on my next quiz.

Well hope everyone had a great weekend! I just kind of chilled all weekend which was nice. Getting caught up on my homework, reading, and of course house work as always (never ending) but I am ready for class tomorrow and of course FLEX day on Tuesday.

Theresa how was your weekend? How is the baby? Well hope you had a nice one. I will see you in class tomorrow and thank you for forwarding the email from Mr. H to me I really appreciate you.

    HEY,
I just finished reading chapter 4 of Talent Code a couple of minutes ago. The end of that chapter actually caught my attention while i was reading it. Coyle talks about the staggering babies that communicate the sensation of deep practice. The babies just keep on trying and trying after they fail to walk making more myelin and earning more skills. However, i also liked reading about the Holy Shit Effect in the begining of the chapter as well.

    To Charlene,
MAth is not that hard you just have to understand it and it will be easier to do. i was always better at Math than English since i was small. When Mr. Hsiao was going to give us our paragraphs back i thought i was going to get a low grade. However, I actually got a pretty good grade. So I think i should also have a better mindset when I turn in my papers. Studying is always good for a Math class. It is slao good to study with someone else that way you can help each other understand the material.

My reflection on Ch 4 it inspired me to read about athletes who those with growth mindset found success in doing their best in learning and improving you just don’t give up. You practice over and over until done right. That makes me feel not to give up and to keep on going.

Chapter 4 of mindset talks about the champion mindset, giving examples of many sports legends and how there mindsight out-weighed their talent. It talked about how these figures failed repearedly before success and how they werent considered naturals. Even with that being said, they only worked harder to prove there doubters wrong. Thats what i liked most about this chapter. Very inspirational!

    "Talent Code" - Chapter Four

In this chapter it explains the three rules of deep practice and gives examples of it.
Adriaan De Groot talks about how one gets the HSE when something interesting happens. One is amazed and cannot fathom what had just happened. The HSE is a mix of envy, admiration, and disbelief. One rule for deep practice is chunking. This chunking step is when one looks at the task as the big picture and then one divides this big picture into the small chunks, then one takes their time. One slows down the process at the beginning to understand this and then one starts to speed up. The second rule is repeating your practice over and over again. If one does not practice for a month, one loses everything. If you stop a talented athlete from practicing for a month they lose their skill. This is why it is important for one to repeat practices daily. Lastly, one has to feel this skill that one wants to master. One has to feel it inside and out. One picks the skill, reach for it, study how much of a gap is between the skill and the reach, and then repeat these steps. In The Talent Code, Daniel Coyle says, “The HSE is the feeling of seeing talent bloom in people who we thought were just like us.” (74) For one to become a master at the skill they have one has to practice these rules of deep practice. One has to chunk the steps it takes to do this skill. Second, one has to repeat this practice process over and over again. Lastly, one has to learn to feel this skill. These three steps are to become better at your skill and someday master it. This is when ones HSE feeling goes away and understands how this person one thought could not beat us comes back and do it better than when he started. So, to become better one has to practice deeply to master the skill one wants.

    Chapter 4 Reflection on mindset

In the book it mention Muhammad Ali failed his measurement for boxing and he did not have the strength like other boxer, but he had the speed. He is also one of the greatest boxer now. This remind me of the other boxer named Pacquiao, even though he is little, but he have the strength, the speed and ready to knock someone out when he is performing his job. Sometimes you cannot judge someone just by their appearance or how they perform in the beginning, because of how the person mind work and their ability to keep trying can make them the best at what they are trying to accomplish.

    Reflection ch.4 Mindset

So this chapter was fairly interesting to me because it tied Mindset & Talent code together in a way. This chapter talked about the mindset of certain athletes for example, MIchael Jordan. I had no idea that he was cut from the varsity team he was in, and how to him that was not the end of basketball. Instead, he focused on fixing his weaknesses and kept practicing over and over again. This showed that he has a growth mindset willing to keep learning to fix mistakes and to keep trying. If he had a fixed mindset he would have just accepted the cut as a failure and given up. As I read this chapter, I could not help, but to look back at my life during the time I was in dance in high school and how I was not the best one, but I always tried to improve which landed me in intermediate. Now, as I think of it, it was the mindset I had to not give up that kept me going. On the other hand, the chapter also talks about Pedro Martinez who had a huge freak out. He was a Boston red sox pitcher who simply took out his anger on his coach, batter and catcher. The fact that curse was upon them and the almost losing game triggered something in him which lead to his actions. If Pedro’s mindset was a growing one he could have possibly changed the outcome of that game and his meltdown. The way Mindset and Talent code tied in together was practice and the growth mindset that showed how these athletes utilized both.

So I just finish reading both because the I was watching the Falcons and the Eagles game at Buffalo Wild Wings. Its crazy because I think I saw Mr. Hsiao at Kmart? mindset talks the mindset of a champion for example Billy Beane. He was consider to be the next Babe Ruth, but he had that mentality he couldn't fail. That's where everything went down hill for him. That's because bill had a fixed mindset, like carol s. clark said being so imbued with the fix mindset, Beane was trapped. Furthermore, that's when lenny Dykstra step in and showed Beane that mindset was more important than talent. He realized that you had to go through a process and not talent.

I felt I really connected when ch 4 talks about that Michael Jordan wasn't a natural he had to practice ALOT and be committed if he wanted to get better and this reminded me of when I was small and I really wanted a bicycle but in order to have one of my own I had to show my parent I knew of to ride one so I would practice every day on my sister bike it took me about two weeks to actually be good at it and keep my balance until I did it I was really proud of myself.

Hello everyone I'm in Miami due to work reasons and on Friday i will go to Cuba, to attend a group of customers that are going to visit the island. Is almost 2 am and I'm still working on the last details of the trips and the homework. But I feel very happy despite all the work because I love what I do.

I have decided to post on the Mohamed Ali's story on chapter four of Mindset. Even though he did not have the right physical characteristics to be a heavyweight champion, and his techniques were completely unorthodox, he was one of the great boxers of his time.

A great part of his success was due to the fact that he would study his opponents, learning everything about them mentally and physically. He would identify their weak spots, and would attack them both inside and out of the ring.

He was so sure about the outcome of the fight and the weaknesses of the opponents, due to all of his mental preparation, that anytime he set foot on the ring, he was so relaxed and confident, and even cloning around.

He exhibited a great mind control and discipline despite all the cloning around.

I think one of the greatest fights of the past century would have been Teofilo Stevenson vs Mohamed Ali.

    Chapter 4 Mindset

I enjoyed reading chapter 4 of Mindset. My favorite part was reading about Michael Jordan, one of the sports legend. Mindset chapter 4 discussed many athletes and their struggles and motivation. Mindset talked about how Jordan has always been rejected in basketball but with his perseverance and mind to never give up, he achieved his dreams.

    Chapter 3 of Talent Code

Myelin is actually very important to us. Honestly if it wasn't for the book I wouldn't even bothered knowing what myelin was until now. The Z-boys is familiar with me. Their passion for skating really shows. They kept trying and trying until they got it right. "the more myelin you have on board, the smarter you can be." Interesting.. Wisdon is found in older people because their circuits are fully insulated nd for teenagers it's not fully there. I feel as though myelin is everywhere. It's a special source in our system.

    Reflection Ch5 The Talent Code

To help one improve skills and growth. There are two parts, which are Ignition and Deep Practice.
Ignition supplies the energy, while deep practice translate the energy over time into forward progress, a.k.a. wraps of myelin. It is not always easy to achieve ones goal. Sometimes it can be a very hard mountain to climb. For example, the genetic explanation for work class achievement is useless in this case, because the people on this list are linked by shared life events that has nothing to do with chromosomes. In Talent Code, Daniel Coyle, "Pursuing a goal, having motivation-all of that predate consciousness," said John Bargh, a psychologist at Yale University who pioneered automaticity studies in the mid 1980's. This process starts off slow. Ignition and deep practice works together. Ignition is about setting the signals and subconscious forces that create ones identity. Deep practice is about taking small baby steps and continuing to practice over and over again.

    Reflection Ch 5 Mindset

Mindset for business and leadership. In leadership there are two mindsets, fixed and growth. In fixed mindset, the leader contiuousless expresses that they are the most superior on the board. For example, Iacocca craved the approval of Henry Ford II and the royal trappings of office. He could measur himsel by, the things that would prove that he was somebody. While, for someone with growth mindset. Whereas, the leader with the growth mindset, shows their concerns for the personnel development and extensive discussion of it. For example, growth mindset leaders start with a belief in human potential and development, bot their own and other people's. Instead of using the company as a vehicle for their greatness, they use it as an engine of growth for themselves, employees, and the company as a whole. Alfred Dunlap says, "I hate having to use the first person. Nearly everything I've done in my life has been accomplished with other people. Please remember that every time you see the word I in these pages, it refers to all those colleagues and friends and some I might have missed." In Mindset, Dr. Carol S. Dweck (126).
In order to run a successful business, one must be concerned about the employees. One must have dedication. One must not worried be if their false image. Being a leader takes more then looking down on ones employee and should truly be concerned regarding the working environment, if it is up to par.

Do people with fixed mindset really live in a world where some people are superior and some are inferior?
Well according to Carol Dweck that is exactly what it is. People with a fix- mindset believe that they are superior to others and need validation from others because they do not believe in themselves, they need to hear how great they are from other people and do not want others around them that question their actions or orders. Fixed-mindset people want to be the big fish so that when they compare themselves to those around them. They feel as if they are the royal king of the kingdom and everyone around them are mere servants. They get so full of themselves that they are not open to grow or learn.
Carol Dweck in the Mindset says “We know from our studies that people with a fixed mindset do not admit and correct their deficiencies.”(page 109- paragraph 1)
Because they feel as if they are flawless and superior. They are above everyone else and if they are superior to everyone else then there is nothing to learn from them, but these people and with a fixed-mindset do not have true confidence in themselves or they would welcome change and new ideas no matter where the ideas came from.

Okay, I am not sure if I am posting in the right format but to put it all in my own words I really enjoyed this chapter in the Mindset especially since my major is Administrative Assistant and I have always worked in the business office type atmosphere and have worked with and for people with this type of fixed-mindset as a matter of fact I can see myself in some of these situations. There have been times that I craved validation for something I have done. One thing that really stuck out to me was in the Mindset Carol Dweck talks about students just memorizing information just to pass a test but not fully studying to learn. Man how I can relate to that I swear I can hardly remember things that I learned last semester because my main goal was to get a good grade not actually learn the information. I still like the Mindset better then the Talent Code I have to force myself to read the chapters out the Talent Code as to where I really enjoy the Mindset. I get the message it is trying to send but I have to really focus when I read it.
Besides all that things are going pretty good for me. I found out it was not my ink that is low in my printer but the printer itself. I changed the ink cartridge and it still reads low. Guess it’s time to buy a new one.
Well I will see you all in class tomorrow hope everyone is having a great weekend. Oh yeah and did everyone get the email from Mr. Hsiao on how he wants us to blog? I am not really sure about turning the main idea into an argument. Anyone have any suggestions?

    Reflection chapter 5: Mindset

Oh business world seems so much fun, unfortunately not my ideal job or career. I was really interesting to read about the mindset some of the well known corporations CEO had. I mean the way that Paul Kazarian treats his employees through abuse, was a huge shock. Everyone understands frustration, but physically abusing someone is a little to far. The way that most of theses fixed mindset bosses felt were the need to feel superior above everyone else and having an all time high alter ego. In a way there were selfish and cared more of their on appearance than the company they were representing or running. However, there was one CEO with a growth mindset that I enjoyed reading that was Lou Gerstner. A man who first turned down the position of IBM CEO, then later accepted. He believe in promotion growth. In order to do so, he took several steps. First, he opened up channels of communication by asking questions about the company. Second, he fired politicians and people who were internal intrigue. He started rewarding people that helped colleagues. Finally, he would emphasize certain messages; such as, “We aren't looking to crown princes; we need to work as a team,” also “Genius is not enough we need to get the job done” and my favorite “We are not hereditary royalty: we sere at the pleasure of our clients.” all of the messages have such a strong meaning of teamwork, improvement, always trying and passion. It just showed how much he cared not about himself, but the company and all its contributions with employees.

    Talent Code- Chapter 5

Not only does one have to do deep practice in growing skill one also needs ignition. Ignition is a process where motivation is created and sustained. Just like Coyle used the example of a gas tank combined to an engine to make the car move. So ignition is the one element providing the energy to one does. Some people usually do not know when their ignition happened or the cue of where their passion ever started for what they are so great at. In Talent Code, Daniel Coyle says, "Ignition doesn't follow normal rules because it's not designed to follow rules" (120,2). That being true. It is made to work in giving one energy for whatever one does or was chosen to do. It can happen out of nowhere withouth one knowing. It is like cues or things that happen in one's life which triggers one's motivation to move toward their goals. Like the fictional scene in Mark Twain's Tom Sawyer where Tom is whitewashing a fence with strict orders from his aunt and a neighbor named Ben goes and talks to Tom. Tom in a way ignites Ben's motivation in wanting to also whitewash Aunt Polly's fence. Ben got ignited by observing every move Tom was making and was absorbed. It just happened.

    Reflection on Chapter 5 "Mindset"

Why is having a growth mindset CEO better than a fixed mindset CEO? Researchers did studies on different companies that had either a fixed or growth mindset CEO. The companies with a growth mindset CEO took a failing company and set it up for greatness. The growth mindset CEOs believed in human development and looked at the failures while keeping faith in what they will succeed in the end. These CEOs with the growth mindset believe that you had to have courage to be open to change and new ideas no matter where it came from. These CEOs believe in guiding their companies rather than judging them. In “Mindset”, Dr. Carol S. Dweck says, “Real self-confidence is not reflected in a title, an expensive suit, a fancy car, or series of acquisitions. It is reflected in your mindset: your readiness to grow.” (127). Running a great company is not about what you have or the validation you have/want, instead taking errors and failures as a learning opportunity for both the CEO and company as a whole. Having a fixed mindset CEO only sets up a company for failure. These CEOs only worry about bringing in what they want and not care who is being stepped on or who it hurts. These fixed mindset CEOs only care for their success and not the companies. As for a growth mindset CEOs, they want to understand better why certain areas are not producing better outcomes and go to the source of these areas. Growth mindset CEOs selected people by their mindsets and believed in team work not a one man show. This is why having a growth mindset CEO is better than working for a fixed mindset boss.

    Chapter 5 "Mindset"
Fixed Mindset people are afraid to show they are wrong and Growth mindset find a way to improve themselves. I do not get why fixed mindset people have to lie about their mistake or afraid to find a way that they can improve. I agree with how Alan Wurtzel ask question and debated until the answer become more clear. I liked the way they put the business students into two group. Making one fixed mindset and the second one growth mindset. Eventually fixed mindset is too worrying about their appearance and growth mindset is worrying about practicing. So basically growth mindset was able to go through their mistake and change it. In Mindset, by Carol Dweck says, "as these leaders cloaked themselves with flatterers who extolled their virtues, and hid from problem, it is no wonder they felt invincible."page# 122...A person try to make their appearance the best as possible, usually do not mean they are the best. Their fixed mindset make them afraid to show their real inner person. All they care about is how they look to others. So they look like a winner, but really they are losing. I think they should take their mistake more serious and fixed it. It is okay to not always look smart atleast you know that you can learn from your mistake and improve it. I prefer looking dumb for that moment then looking dumb throughout everything. By the way I also have a quote, it sound like what a growth mindset person would do.
Life is "trying things to see if they work."

The discussion will be about, "if she can do it, why can't I?" In order to grow a skill, they would have to be dedicated to it. But, it requires deep practice and that means hard work. Deep practice is not easy because one would need to push theirselves and be commited to grow their skills. If they put in time and effort to improve their skills, good progress will develop. In Talent Code, Daniel Coyle says, "deep practice isn't a piece of cake: it requires energy, passion, and commitment." So, someone would need the rocket fuel to keep pushing themselves to the max to build their skills. Once they consume that mindset, a talent will be created. Deep practice is all about putting time, effort, and hard work in order to build one's talent. When you follow through deep practice anyone can do it.

    Chapter 5 "Mindset"

In business to be successful, you need to have a growth mindset just like in sports. Growth Mindset CEOs seem to make their company grow while fixed Mindset CEOs will become the reason for the company's downfall. In "Mindset", Carol S. Dweck says "Fixed mindset leaders, like fixed-mindset people in general, live in a repeatedly affirm that they are superior, and the company is simply a platform for this"(112). Basically, he means the CEOs that only care how their reputation is seen will not improve the company but make it worse. For example, Iacocca wanted to be known as a great CEO in fact better than Henry Ford. That was the only thing in his mind. He spent most of his time on his company's image not on how the company should develop. Anne Mulcahy was a growth mindset CEO which was known as "the hottest turnaround act since Lou GErstner"(131). She thought of her employees. She did not want to fire them but tried her best to keep the company going so she lowered their wages when she had to. She never gave up and kept working till a year later and was in better shape.Fixed mindset people do not see the future but only care for how their image is now.

"As athletes, we're used to reacting quickly. Here, it's 'come, stop, come, stop.' There's a lot of downtime. That's the toughest part of the day."

    Mindset-Chapter 5

When in trouble they turned to Lou Gerstner for help and as a fixed mindset he would not help. The growth mindset comes into play when they put him on to a pedestal by praising his strategy. He became a leader taking charge of communication. He visited all their operations and took the workers ideas and opinions in mind about making the company stronger. He redefined the future of the IBM industry more than once. In Mindset Carol Dweck says,"Let's put together in meetings the people who can help solve a problem, regardless of position." Gerstner was working in teamwork to get the job done. He demanded more from his workers, he needed results. In his hands was the future of IBM and he took it as a leader and regained industry leadership. He grew into a different mindset. He was also very productive in the direction that he took the industry in to.

I know I'm late with my post on chapter 5 Mr. Hsiao but i was in jail for 24 hours. I did not know you can go to jail for video tapping little kids doing stupid stuff. But I chose to do mindset for this post.

Iaccoa was an example of mindset and leadership.
Iacocca thought he was bigger than everyone else. Iacocca had a fix mindset that messed with his ego. After he got fired from ford thats when his fix mindset change to a growth mindset.
In Mindset Carols S. Dweck said "Iacocca applied himself to the monumental task of saving face and, in the process"(pg115)
Iacocca acted really quick when he became the CEO of Chrysler. He hired the right people for the job; also, bring out new models. He lobby the government for bailout loans. In conclusion Iacocca is an example of a mindset and leadership because he started off with a fixed mindset, and when he got fired from Ford. He started a new chapter with Chrysler as a growth mindset. He took Leadership by hiring the right people and getting new car models for the company.

    Talent Code-Chapter 6

Most of the time mind reading your partners mind is not the answer to everything. Lucy and Tom needed more communication between each other. Lucy has to stop coming in conclusion with her self, when Toms says something. Tom needs to be more and use different and understandable vocabulary that his partner will understand. In Mindset, Carol Dweck say,"part of low-effort belief is the idea that couples should be able to read each other's minds" (150) You have to built courage and ask your significant other when something does not seem clear to you. Mind reading is not the answer in a relationship, if you want her/him to understand what you are thinking you have to communicate. Also most of the time the way you view something other may not view it the same way. It is impossible for them to reach your expectation if you do not communicate. As a growth mindset you being to learn and understand to talk differences out and know everyone has a divergent way of view things.

    Talent Code Chapter 6

As I read the chapter, there was one specific section that caught my attention and that was the language of ignition. It talked about the famous Z-boys skating team. It mention how Engblom a guy who the Z-boys surrounded themselves with helped, them become to what they are now famous for. Now, Engblom was not a huge talker, but more of a mumbler who use things like, “ good job dude” and “nice shred” things that were not that big of a deal. However, it was those exact words that helped activate levels of motivation and effort. So, regardless of how tiny these words were they sent the right signals to keep the Z-boys on their feet, to keep trying and practicing. Realizing how powerful little words can be is kind of a shock and something that I will tae in to help me or my family or friends with words that can be encouraging and ultimately lead them towards the right path.

    Mindset Chapter 6

Relationships well personally being in one i can say it is a lot of work. So, reading this chapter was really fascinating. The way fixed mindset people end relationships based on the fact they think if it is meant to be people should not work so hard. I mean yeah we are introduced when we were kids to Cinderella, Snow White, and to a happily ever after, but those are all stories not a real life event and to think that some fixed mindset people think of it like that. As i kept reading, I learned more about myself and my partner. In the book, it gives examples, but one I enjoyed was about the mind reading. How some things you might say have a total difference to you and your partner. For example, Carol Dweck was with her husband and her husband said, “ I need more space.” Carol was blank and could not believe what she was hearing. She got the courage to ask, “what do you mean?” and he responded, “ I need you to more over, so I can have room. This typical thing happens everyday. We just simply assume instead of asking As I read more, I noticed that people with fixed mindset simply end relationships based on fears and not willing to take challenges and that is something that growth mindset people are willing to over come. Overall, this chapter helped me see my relationship and partner in a whole new way.

    Reflection:Ch 6 Mindset

There are two mindsets even in relationship categories. Fixed and Growth Mindset. Fixed mindset deals with a person that is unable to move forward with their own life. Hold grudges. Have hate filled thoughts about the ex-lover. For example, people with the fixed mindset, their number one goal came through loud and clear. Revenge. In Mindset, Carol S. Dweck says, "I will get back at him, hurt him any way I could if I got the chance. He deserves it", (145). Growth mindset deals with a person having the ability to forgive and forget. Wish nothing but the best of luck for ex-lover and self. Having the ability to date again, give their heart to someone and possibly marry. For example, Cathy, Carol's cousin got stood up at the alter. She went and changed out of her wedding dress to her black party dress and went out and partied. In Mindset, Carol S. Dweck , Cathy says,"I'll be damned if I'm going to sit here and feel sorry for myself" (146). Yes, you will be hurt, afraid to open ones heart and love again. It take strength, courage to keep on living after getting hurt. "Tour comprendre c'est tout pardonner". To understand all is to forgive all.

    Reflection on Mindset Ch 3

Well I am pretty behind in posts when it comes to posting on reading the chapters. But I gotta say I rather read Mindset rather than talent code. Talent code makes me fall sleep but reading Mindset is interesting to me i can relate to it more like in chapter 3 on pg 58 where it says "In fact, students with he fixed mindset tell us that their main goal in school aside from looking smart is to exert as little effort as possible." I can relate to this because I use to be like that in high school.

Catching up Reflection Ch 4 Talent Code

In chapter 4 it explains how we can learn anything. We must apply 3 rule of deep practice. The first is which one has to do is looking at the big picture, or finished product, and breaking it down to smaller pieces. This step is called "chunking".You have to learn each step then put it together. The second rule that you repeating it over and over. Until it becomes easier. The third rule requires one to feel it. The step is easy to understand and get it.

chapter 5 of "Talent Code" is incredible. That whole chapter is inspiring, and proves that point that it really does not matter where you are from, but that everyone can do what they love best. I am not much of a baseball player, but the fact that those kids have been practicing there whole life is incredible. It just makes me want to get up and start running when I read this book. This is the only book that I have actually been reading, thank you Mr. Hsiao.

In chapter 5 of Talent Code, Daniel Coyle speaks of a young female golf player whose skills resembles Tiger Woods. As a matter of fact, Daniel Coyle states that she isn't a female Tiger, yet Tiger is a male version of her. This golfer's name is Se Ri Pak from South Korea. All of the countrywomen was very moved and inspired by Pak's skill in golf.

There are two type of mindsets even when it comes to bullies or the victims of being bullied.
Children with a fixed mindset who have endured being bullied at school always want to lash out and take revenge in a violent matter, but the children who endured the same type of bulling who had a growth mindset did not fantasize about getting even or hurting the people that hurt them, nor did they allow it to effect their self-esteem. Here we see the same situation as we did in the last chapter with people being categorized as either superior or inferior. Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold, the Columbine shooter are the outcome of fixed mindset children being bullied. They planned their revenge and how they were going to hurt the people that hurt them. In the Mindset, Carol Dweck says, “Even if a victim doesn’t have a fixed mindset to begin with, prolonged bullying can instill it.” Children who are continuously bullied can eventually develop a fixed mindset, and as the victims hold it in they either keep it all bottled up inside and this can lead to depression and even suicide, or it can lead to a violent rage and the outcome can be horrible as we all know firsthand with so many school shootings these days.

    Chapter 6 Mindset

In chapter 6 of Mindset, it discusses both fixed and growth mindset about relationships. It describes how fixed mindset people are "UNLOVEABLE". As Carol Dweck says "the fixed mindset gives them no recipe for healing their wound, all they could do was hope to wound the person who inflicted it" (145). People with a fixed mindset only have revenge on their mind. While people with growth mindset has forgiveness on their mind. Many of them do not want to live in the past, they would rather just move on with their lives.

    Chapter 6 - Mindset

Growth Mindsets believe that you, your partner and your relationship can develop but, a fixed mindset believes that it has to be perfect from the beginning. A fixed mindset believes that if you have to work on your relationship that it was not meant to be. This mindset believes that all the good things are suppose to happen automatically. But, for growth mindset people the believe for that to have a good and lasting relationship that you do have to put work into it and a lot of effort to overcome the differences you and your partner have. As for fixed mindsets they believe that if you and your partner are compatible that everything should just come naturally with no efforts. In Mindset, Dr. Carol D. Dweck says, "...This belief-that success should not need effort-robs people of the very thing they need to make their relationship thrive."(150). People with fixed mindsets believe that everything is magical. The fixed mindset people look to blame their partner for their conflicts. If a fixed mindset person sees flaws in their partner they become unhappy in their relationship and sometimes give up. As for growth mindset people see their partners flaws but still think their relationship is fine. Growth mindset people usually confront the situation but the fixed mindset people would rather not go down that route and this leads to their break-up.

Mr. Hsiao Don't get mad for me posting this late. Just finish doing my other homework assignments. I had to do a speech on a bill and it was very hard to do. But any ways I chose mindset.

In a relationship when people have a fix mindset, they feel judged and labeled by the rejection. So they tend to hurt more by say mean stuff like "I'll never forget what they said to me." other would wish for there ex partner to be miserable than being happy. A fix mindset would say "Revenge is sweet."
In Mindset Dr. Carol S. Dweck says "With Revenge comes your redemption."
If you had a growth mindset this would not effect you. You would learn to understand, forgiven, and move on. Having a fix mindset you would not be able to learn those things. In conclusion I feel it's better to have a growth mindset because you can learn from the mistakes you made in that relationship. This would help you on your next relationship and what not to do wrong.

I find Chapter 7 of "The Talent Code" to be more boring than the previous chapters. I think its because it talks about 5th graders and KIPP, and well I find 5th graders boring. I think its cool that they take the kids to colleges at such an early age because it really gives them a long term goal, and it motivates them to do better in school. I don't think there is anything wrong with there methods but, isn't that why they have private schools? And why don't they start at a younger grade like 3rd or even 1st?

To fall in love, in growth mindset you are willing to developed affection and willing to change and in fixed mindset you believe everything have to be perfect just to fall in love. It does not matter if your relationship are going through changes, you can always go through and fixed it some how. you are capable of growth. Believing everything will be like a fairy tale with an happily ever after ending. Mindset, Carol Dweck says, "You, your partner, and relationship are capable of growth and change."page 148 it does not matter if you go through ups and down as long you have eachother. If a couple argue, they should find a way to end the argument and make eachother happy.

In Chapter six of "Mindset", finding your partner also belongs in the fixed or growth mindset category. Fixed mindset people would want someone who is already perfect for them. I think many people would like that but growth mindset people know that everyone has their problems and it can be dealt with.In "Mindset", Carol Dweck says,"You can believe that your qualities are fixed, your partner's qualities are fixed, and the relationship's qualities are fixed, your partner's qualities are fixed, and the relationship's qualities are fixed..."(148). Fixed mindset people think there is a perfect someone for them because people cannot change. So the person has to be already perfect since they cannot be changed into their liking. If they dislike little things of their partner, they will find another.

Today I went to Skid Row on that field trip with Mr. Hsiao and his students. I did not expect to see so many people there, I am glad i went to lend a hand. I was helping in a station opening backpacks and stuffing them with school supplies. I am happy that I helped out in some way, I hope that Mr. Hsiao will have more field trips like the one we had today. I actually wanted to stay longer and do more, but because of the circumstances that we had, it was not possible.

Hi everyone. I was a little disappointed not to see more of our class on the field trip Thursday but also understand everyone has classes and things to do, and trust me getting up at dark thirty kind of sucked. Mr. H thank you for allowing me to experience such a wonderful event. The first group of kids I got were wonderful and just so thankful. Wow, it makes you really grateful for the things one has. I will never forgot that day as long as I live. Theresa, Lisa, Cynthia, and of course Unique (Shady)and Miguel thank you for making that day so great even though Miguel took off and kicked it with all the Cerritos College students. Just to see all those families out there waiting for us was so amazing. The whole experience was amazing and I will be forever grateful to be a part of such a wonderful event. It’s funny how God works things out. When Mr. H asked us to donate $10.00 I really did not have it to give as I get paid on the 10th of each month so you can imagine how broke I was on the 6th, but I still gave the donation and figured we would just have to do without a couple of things over the weekend until I get paid. Well I received a phone call today from a friend who owed $100.00 and she paid me today. See it really does come back to you ten-fold.

Michael Jordan is an example of a growth mindset. He is a hard working athlete. He pushes himself even if he didn't get to play for North Carolina State. He works on his weakness. After loosing a game, Jordan practice making shots for hours. In Mindset, Carol Dweck says, "a genius who constantly wants to upgrade his genius."(86) Basket ball was not easy for Michael. He had a passion that he want to be great at. He focused on practicing for hours to be where he is at today. His hard work led an admiration to people. Chapter 5 Talent Code

McPherson demonstrates children who has a long-term commitment has much more deep practice.
McPherson showed us ways how children either did good in the long run with instruments and some who didn't do well. He demonstrated in a graph which explained why this occurred. It wasn't because of how high their IQ was, math skills, or sense of rhythm. In Talent Code, Daniel Coyle says, "When long-term commitment combined with high levels of practice, skills skyrocketed."(104) Before these kids even started their first lesson, McPherson asked how long they thing they will play. Even with the same practice some did better than others. One that says they play for the long-committed term, they tend to perform better and progressed faster. They have to want to play rather they have to.

    Chapter 6 of Mindset

    Interesting chapter.
This chapter explains how a fixed and growth mindset differ through relationships. When your in a fixed mind-set all you seek is revenge when arguing. People with the growth mindset only yearns for understanding and learning from the relationships. They learn from each other what is really the importance while the fixed mindset does not care. Rejection is not a fixed mindset friend. Fixed mindsets expect everything good to happen. Growth mindset expects flaws from their significant other. They have a will to put in effort and see what they should change. In the beginning of Charlene and Max relationship, everything went good. After the 4th, 5th stage of the relationship Max needed space, now in the fixed mindset when this occur they both think that if the relationship were the right one, they wouldn't have to work so hard. Pg (149)
Laura and James is an example of growth mindset. Laura always yells and and be self-centered but James doesn't mind because she has been there for him. instead, he talks it over with her. Over time Laura progressed. They help each other out. Page (160)

    Fred Jordan Mission - 10/06/2011

This field trip is something I will not forget, ever. I was so shocked to see how much families were there when we arrived. The line went down that one street and it wasn't even 9am. Charlene, Cynthia and I worked the hygiene station and then moved over to where Unique, Alejandra, and Miguel were getting backpacks ready. It was a great learning experience and gives one a different outlook when complaining about one's life. What touched me so much that day was the twin girls I had in my first group. When it was time to drop them off to their parents, they hugged me and went off to their mom. I walked away crying and just reminded myself that it's the simplest things that can make someone's day a whole lot better. Thank you Mr. H for this opportunity and I look forward to going back. I really wish there were more people from our class there.

Well I hope everyone has a great weekend and remember MIDTERM IS ON MONDAY. lol

I was reading chapter 6 and it is very unique. It starts saying how love isnt so smooth either. Fixed mindset gives them no recipe for healing their wound also intense feelings of bitterness and wanting to just get sweet revenge back to the person who hurt them. And growth mindset just want move along to forget and forgive they think well life goes on I cant feel sorry for myself. They say I will survive no matter what.

Thomas Edison is an example of a fixed mindset. Thomas was the first person to ever build a lightbulb on his own. He lived and worked in New Jersey. People said that all he had around him was tools and himself working on how to create a lightbulb. He is more of a person who only like to work alone and no helpers needed. In Mindset, Carol Dweck says," In truth, the record shows quite a different fellow, working in quite a different way.(55)" Thomas Edison is a fixed mindset becasue he worked long hours and tried to discover new solutions to create a successful lightbulb. Always putting in time and effort in what he does best. Once in a while, he would have others help him such as chemist, physicists and mathematicians to come up with the right information. Reflection on Ch. 6

In chapter 6 of "Mindset" Carol Dweck talks about relationships and the difference between them having fixed or growth mindsets. In a growth mindset relationship both the male and female couple work together to make each other feel good about themselves.People in the growth mindset think that things can be developed over time. While in the fixed mindset relationship there is one in the couple always finding a mistake in the other. in the fixed mindset people believe that the ideal is instant or perfect. In Mindset, Carol Dweck says "So the fixed- and growth- mindset people confronted the situation with different attitudes. One embraced the challenge and the other feared the risk" (164). The Dweck has been giving examples of this all through out the book. The growth mind people like to challenge them selves. They also want to strive for something. For the fixed mind people they try to hide behind their protective shield. They like to stay where they are and stick to what they know and what they do best. They can be two different people.

When people are in a relationship with a fixed mindset, they believe that everything perfect is going to happen in the future. Perhaps they think that they would get married or probably someday have children of their own. People in a relationship believe only three things that would happen. They believe that there qualities are fixed, partners qualities are fixed and that the relationship is fixed. In mindset, Carol Dweck says,"In the fixed mindset, the ideal is instant, perfect, and perpetual compatability.(148)" People with a fixed mindset believes everything will go their way. They only see the goodness in the relationship and does not see the negatives. People with a growth mindset believes that these things could build up and are capable of change. Both mindset seems similar to each other, but, different in few ways. Most people assume that their relationship is special. People in a relationship with a fixed mindset believes everything is perfect.

    Chapter 5
Primal Cues "If She Can Do It, Why Can't I". It requires energy, passion, and commitment. To do something what is trying to do. The motivation fuel, the second element of the talent code. It the deep practice is the progress of it all. Visiting the talent hotbeds, seeing a lot of passion. It showed in the way people carried their violins, cradled their soccer balls, and sharpened their pencils. The passion was always there, providing the emotional rocket fuel that kept them firing their circuits, honing skills, getting better. For South Korea's golfers, it was when twenty-year-old Se Ri Pak won the McDonald's LPGA Championship and became a notional icon. Before her Korea had not succeeded in golf. In Talent Code, Daniel Coyle says," Se Ri Pak is not the female Tiger Woods; Tiger Woods is the male Se Ri Pak."(98) The inspiration was weaker at the start and got progressively stronger, but for a more fundamental reason: deep practice takes time (ten thousand hours, as the refrain goes). Where deep practice is a cool, conscious act, ignition is a hot, mysterious burst, an awakening.

A feeling we have all had is the "Holy Shit Effect". This is the wave of surprise and confusion experienced when the guy from your school is suddenly a "youtube" sensation. You ask yourself where did this come from?.From the outside looking in, you see someone conquering great feats. In The Talent Code Daniel Coyle Says,"The observer is dumbstruck,amazed...while the talents owner is unsurprised". The shock comes from the sense of minumal effort. The impression of minumal effort is merely a facade. The task has been broken down in such a way, that it has become a reflex to the performer. The reflex is similiar to adults reading "Dr. Suess" books to small children. The words don't have to be thought about, they are recognized and immediately read. To small children this may seem astonishing, because they don't understand how the reflex has been developed by the adult. This lack of knowledge in the steps taken to acheive these miraculous feats, is the "Holy Shit Effect".

There are some students who are borned with a fixed and growth mindset. People with a fixed mindset has to work hard in order to succeed to a whole new level. As for those who has a fixed mindset have a gift to take in information and use this purpose for many reasons. Some of the gifted children have gotten there genes from their parents which shown that these parents are intelligent theirselves. Some of the children are capable of learning theirselves and experiencing new information everyday. In Mindset, Carol Dweck says,"Isn't it the kids with the fixed mindset the vulnerable kids who are obsessed with this? Wouldn't harping on intelligence or talent make kids all kids even more obsessed with it.(175)" Studies are assuming that children with fixed mindset are able to succeed in a higher level than other kids because they are supported by their parents. Everytime they do well in something, parents would make them stronger in what they do because parents always saying good job or good boy/girl. Children with a growth mindset work hard on their own level without the support of anyone. There are many differences between a growth and fixed minded person, which shows that there are many people who still study these purposes.

Usain Bolt is an example of deep practice. Bolt is the second of three children and lost both his parents at an early age. Usain Bolt is one of the tallest and most fastest human being alive. He set the world wide record in the 100 meter race. In Talent Code, Daniel Coyle says,"losing a parent at a young age was not what gave them talent; rather, it was the primal cue-you are not safe. First step, talent requires deep practice. Second step, deep practice requires vast amounts of energy. Third step, primal cues trigger huge outpourings of energy. After losing his parents, he followed through with deep practice and that's what gave him talent.

Mike Feinberg and Dave Levin is an example of deep practice. They first started out not doing to well in life. At first, they both only complained about how life is very difficult. They are both roommates working as second grade teachers in the Houston public school. In Talent Code, Daniel Coyle says,"their mindset was later summed up by Feinberg:"life sucks, and then you die.(140)" All they did was work, drink beer and watch star trek. Until one day, they heard an inspiring speech that they both attended. So, this pushed them to come up with ideas to create charter schools. In the schools, they expected lesson plans, teaching, techniques, managements, rules and schedules. They wanted to build a school that would definitely be successful in the future. Feinberg and Levin have succeeded through deep practice.

Aaron Beck is an example of a fixed mindset. Beck was a psychiatrist back in the 1960's. He studied his clients beliefs because he believed that this was the wave of anxiety or depression that went through their mind. He believed that these beliefs has caused their negative feelings not only in therapy but in their lives as well. In Mindset, Carol Dweck says,"this is how cognitive therapy was born, one of the most effective therapies ever developed.(215)" Beck proved that he could teach his clients to concentrate and pay attention to these beliefs. Whether they were aware of it or not, they can keep track of what is happening to them. Now his clients are able to stay on track and monitor these beliefs into something positive. Beck has created his own system which helps his clients therapy, he is an example of a fixed mindset.
